Anime dragon’s cartoons are filled with vibrant, often mystical characters. They may lead extraordinary lives because of their incredible powers or magical gifts that set them apart.
And these fanciful realms can contain wondrous creatures of all types, which can be helpful allies or frightening opponents.
Dragons have long piqued society’s interest. These fabled animals exemplify sheer and overwhelming might, dominating all other magnificent creatures.
Anime dragons can play various roles in a plot, such as fierce destroyers, knowledgeable tutors on a hero’s journey, or distant godlike entities that grant wishes.
Their part in the storyline is usually remarkable, and several rates among the best anime characters.
This list consists of dragon half, mythical beasts, most epic anime dragons, demon king’s Island, an adorable dragon from the Aztec dragon, and magical abilities.
20. Dragonite – Pokémon
Dragonite is a newer member of Ash Ketchum’s squad. It can be said as the best anime dragon.
Nonetheless, the orange fool has swiftly become one of Ash’s most powerful Pokémon and a memorable character that steals every scene.
Dragonite has become a fan favorite because of its friendly attitude and significant power.
The dragon is presently undefeated. It most recently defeated Iris’ Haxxors in one of the most exciting bouts in Pokémon anime history.
Dragonite is not the wisest best anime dragon; it does not speak to or advise the young Trainer. It is, however, one of the most intelligent dragon-type Pokémon, with several Pokédex entries characterizing its “human-like intelligence.”
19. Ryūkotsusei – Inuyasha’s father
Rykotsusei was a fearsome Daiykai who terrorized the nation years before the novel’s events. Inuyasha’s father fought and defeated the dragon, putting him to sleep.
Two hundred years later, Inuyasha’s arch-enemy, Naraku, helps Rykotsusei resurrect, and the dragon fights Inuyasha in a violent battle epic anime dragons similar to anime series.
Rykotsusei is arrogant, conceited, harsh, and cunning. He is interested in destruction and always looks for worthy opponents to fight and delight himself with.
He fancies himself indestructible and believes that everyone is beneath him. Rykotsusei is one of the most iconic anime dragons, a monster whose imposing and scary visage matches its deadly reputation in anime series.
18. Kaido – One Piece
Kaido, the world’s Strongest Creature, evolved into the serpentine Azure Dragon after eating the Devil Fruit.
He grows gigantic as a human-dragon hybrid, with thick, resilient blue scales covering his entire body. Kaido becomes much more deadly in its new form.
He breathes fire, generates clouds that let him travel through the air, blows sharp swords, and his roar creates lightning.
Kaido is an excellent illustration of how anime dragons can be respectable and intimidating foes.
Kaido was already cruel as a human, but he became much more lethal as a dragon.
He gradually gains mastery of his draconic powers to the point where he can use them without shifting. That’s one terrifying villain!
17. Hyōrinmaru – Bleach
Hyrinmaru is the materialized soul of Tshir Hitsugaya Zanpakut, one of the anime’s most endearing characters. Hyrinmaru regularly appeared in Hitsugaya’s nightmares as a serpentine ice dragon when he was a boy.
Unfortunately, Hitsugaya loses his Bankai and his capacity to converse with Hyrinmaru during the Thousand-Year Blood War storyline. Hyrinmaru returns to him once he recovers it.
Dragons in anime are typically represented as larger-than-life and frightening, but Hyrinmaru appears mightier and more dangerous than others.
Hyrinmaru blasts other anime dragons out of the water with its wings, big legs, and overall powerful body.
16. Igneel – Fairy Tail
Igneel, the Fire Dragon King, is Natsu Dragneel’s foster father.
Even after abandoning his foster kid, he remains a loving, protective, and caring father figure. After being brutally injured by Acnologia’s Dragon Slaying Magic, he confines his soul into Natsu to heal.
Igneel embarks on a perplexing and exciting quest. He begins as an arrogant dragon, unconcerned about humans and their existence.
However, he learns to understand and care for people via Natsu, to the point where the dragon Metalicana refers to Igneel as the dragon who loves humans the most.
Igneel is, therefore, the perfect embodiment of the ally cliché that befalls most anime dragons, serving as a loving mentor and advisor to the plot’s protagonist.
15. Blue Dragon – Blue Dragon
Blue Dragon is based on the same-named 2066 video game and depicts the story of Shu, a young kid who was given the ability to transform his shadow into a monster.
Shu’s monster as a Shadow Wielder is the invincible Blue Dragon. Their connection is initially adversarial, with the beast refusing to accept Shu’s directives.
He is also disrespectful to the youngster, and although they eventually learn to work together, Blue Dragon still disapproves of Shu’s conduct.

14. Fredrika – Chaika: The Coffin Princess
Fredrika appears sporadically throughout Chaika: The Coffin Princess. She does not have a consistent form and instead adopts various.
Throughout the conflict, she assumed the appearance of a white-horned dragon and returned it once it was time to fight. Fredrika is brilliant, yet she is still a predator that likes pursuing her prey, especially during battle.
Even when they’re allies, anime dragons are generally terrifying.
Nevertheless, the dragon figure inspires respect. Therefore it stands to reason that they frequently appear in combat as either valiant fighters or deadly opponents capable of destroying entire armies.
13. Acnologia – Fairy Tail
Acnologia, the anime’s vicious antagonist, is described as a cataclysmically strong Dragon Slayer.
He bathed in the blood of the dragons he slaughtered, allowing him to transform into a dragon whenever he pleased.
Although he had a strong relationship with dragons at the start of his narrative, he comes to despise them after one destroys his family.
Acnologia is a horrible, bloodthirsty, and vicious entity in both human and dragon form.
He has nothing but hatred and contempt for humans and dragons, and he will stop at nothing until he kills every dragon.
Acnologia, the most terrible and filthy of anime dragons, is famed for his savagery and bloodlust.
12. Shenron – Dragon Ball
Shenron, the fabled and influential entity summoned by the Dragon Balls, is arguably the most known anime dragon.
Shenron is a majestic, serpentine floating green dragon that can fulfill three wishes of anybody who collects all seven Dragon Balls.
Shenron is one of Dragon Ball’s most brilliant characters, but he’s also an entirely neutral creature, fulfilling any request within his power without regard for whether it’s “good” or “evil.”
Although he maintains his austere demeanor for most of his appearances, he does display some desperation, particularly regarding trivial wants. For example, he famously chastises Yamcha for wishing for a piece of jewelry.
11. Pina-Sword Art Online
We begin our list with one of the prettiest dragons in anime.
I used “one of” since there are a surprising number of them… Pina, on the other hand, is undoubtedly at the top of the cuteness scale.
Pina is a juvenile feathered dragon and the first monster to be tamed in Aincrad. It’s Silica’s favorite pet, and she follows her around in other games.
Pina even sacrificed itself at one point to save Silica from an assault that would have killed her, making it one of the friendliest dragons, in my opinion.
It’s the lovely and kind priest-type character that everyone wants in their party, only it’s a dragon.
10. Veldora Tempest-That Time I Reincarnated as a Slime
Veldora is one of the four known True Dragons in his story, making her one of the most powerful characters in SlimeVerse.
A prior hero formerly sealed him, making him one of many dragons (or monsters in general) who match the “sealed monster” cliché.
What distinguishes him from the others is that he is not entirely nasty and despotic.
He’s rather far from it.
Sure, he’s a hothead and a fighter at times. But this is primarily due to his draconic background and upbringing.
On the one hand, he’s a kind and devoted friend to Rimuru, and when things aren’t stressful, he’s a mellow, laid-back man.
9. Icarus-Dragon Balls
I believe just a few Dragon Ball fans (particularly newcomers) are familiar with or recall Icarus. And that makes me feel a bit down.
After all, Icarus had been a big part of Gohan’s youth for a long time. And was one of the show’s few non-humanoid characters.
Icarus is a young dragon that used to hang around with Gohan, notably in the early episodes of Dragon Ball Z and the movies.
Despite its tiny stature, it is swift, decisive, and fearless. And until Gohan learned to fly, that was practically his “Flying Nimbus.”
8. Tohru Kobayashi-Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid
Tohru isn’t your typical giant, terrifying dragon.
But that is why most anime fans adore her.
Sure, her dragon form is as terrifying as any dragon out there. But, under all those thick green scales, she’s pretty kind and joyful.
And, in her demi-human form, Miss Kobayashi’s dragon maid, I believe her most endearing characteristics are increased threefold.
She’s also an excellent drinking companion, as seen by her first meeting with Kobayashi.
All it takes to get on her good side is a few cold ones and a chat.
Of course, you’d have to be brave enough to approach a four-story-tall black dragon.
7. Tomoe-Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy
Tomoe, like Tohru, is a dragon who spends most of the story in her demi-human form.
But, unlike Tohru, who resembles the dragons of Western mythology, Tomoe turns into an oriental dragon every time she transforms becomes a mighty dragon.
Furthermore, she is the polar antithesis of everything you would anticipate from a creature of her proportions.
That is, she is more laid-back and relaxed than proud and passionate.
That’s why, like Tohru, she’s one of the more unusual entries on our list of powerful dragons, formidable dragons, red dragon girls, and Aztec dragons.
6. Porunga-Dragon Ball Super
Porunga is the only dragon in Dragon Ball whose name does not contain the word “Shenron.”
Sure, his much smaller relative has more incarnations than he has (e.g., Omega Shenron, Ultimate Shenron, Super Shenron, etc.)
Porunga, on the other hand, is no slouch.
Told, he’s a roided-up version of the original Shenron, capable of granting three wishes rather than just one.
Who needs the Genie of the Lamp when you can conjure this guy? And, sure, I meant it both literally and metaphorically.
Just look at how terrible this dragon is in comparison to Shenron.
5. Acnologia-Fairy Tail
Acnologia is such a fearsome enemy that he will always be featured while discussing the most prominent and deadliest anime villains of all time as the demon king.
He embodies Friedrich Nietzsche’s famous quote: “He who battles with monsters must be careful lest he becomes a monster.” And if you stare long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back at you.”
Aren’t they terrifying words?
It makes perfect sense because Acnologia was not born a dragon demon king.
He murdered so many of them that he became one next demon king himself.
And, in the end, there’s no disputing that he morphed into something more terrible than the monsters he’d slaughtered.
4. Haku-Spirited Away
Haku is a co-protagonist in Spirited Away, a film generally and justifiably regarded as one of the greatest of its kind.
In human form, he appears to be a little older than a young adolescent boy, although he often acts calmly and maturely.
Furthermore, he is patient, compassionate, and protective of Chihiro, whom he regards as a close friend.
Haku isn’t like other dragons in anime because he has more elegance and tact — yet he still has his less dignified moments.
3. Blue-Eyes White Dragon Ball-Yu-Gi-Oh!
The Blue-Eyes White Dragon is undoubtedly one of the most well-known monster cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! Franchise.
Of course, this popularity stems mainly from the presence of everyone’s favorite wealthy kid in anime, Seto Kaiba’s blue underside.
He seems to like utilizing this card so much…
Even if it doesn’t always work out in the end.
And I’m not sure if Seto photocopies his cards, but he always appears to have an abnormally large number of Blue-Eyes cards in his deck.
I am not going to lie. The dragon does appear to be rather ill.
I can’t say I blame Seto for being enamored with it, Shu’s blue dragon.
2. Shen Long- Dragon Ball Z
Shen Long defies the paradigm of other anime dragons by being a creator rather than a destruction. He is a wish-granting dragon who appears when all Dragon Balls on Earth are combined.
Shen Long’s abilities are unparalleled, and he may grant your innermost desires; he can even resurrect the dead.
1. One Winged Dragon- Tower OF Druaga
Its roar should if its dark crimson skin, piercing yellow eyes, sharp white fangs, and fiery nostrils don’t frighten you. The One-Winged Dragon can easily take on an army and bring it to its knees quickly.
