This third movie is based on the first Dragon Ball, however Mystical Adventure is not part of the main canon like some other movies are. Instead, it tells a more condensed and inner version of the Dragon Ball story in an alternate continuity. This simultaneously makes Mystical Adventure fun and first perplexing.
Although it’s merely an oversimplified version of the plot, it isn’t particularly noteworthy. However, as a martial arts tale starring the seven Dragon Balls, Mystical Adventure is harmless entertainment that may still be seen as a “What If” version of Dragon Ball. It is one of the best Dragon Ball films.

Goku and the heroes are forced to finish what was started because Cooler is cybernetic this time and is enslaving the people of New Namek.

Sleeping Princess in Devil’s Castle, the second Dragon Ball movie ever made, was initially only released in Japan as a quadruple feature alongside the Saint Seiya, Hikari Sentai Maskman, and Choujinki Metalder movies. It follows a young Goku and Krillin as they are already on a mission by Master Roshi as part of their training to look into the titular Devil’s Castle.
Sleeping Princess in Devil’s Castle is a decent enough side story that, regrettably, isn’t all that memorable. It boasts a more experimental tone than many of the following films.
22. Dragonball: Evolution
- Director: James Wong
- Writers: Ben Ramsey, Akira Toriyama
- Stars: Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Chow Yun-Fat
- IMDb Rating: 2.6
- Platform: US – Funimation
Evolution was by far the weakest effort connected to the Dragon Ball universe, and it made no sense at all. It is only natural for adaptations to change the source material to fit a new medium, but there is nothing distinctively Akira Toriyama about Dragonball: Evolution.
The action is weak and slow, failing to even remotely resemble the epic battles portrayed in the manga or anime’s earlier chapters. Even when considered in isolation, Evolution’s characters are simply not intriguing or likable enough to carry an adventure; even though they may share a name with their animated equivalents, Evolution’s characters are essentially wholly different beings. James Marsters is even wasted in the film.
