Richard La Gravenese wrote and directed the famous American drama film Freedom Writers, which was released in 2007. The plot of the film is based on a 1999 book called “The Freedom Writers Diary,” written by a teacher named “Erin Gruwell” for her students and later compiled into real-time diary entries depicting their school life and what they learned in their English class at Woodrow Wilson Classical High School.
Not only that! Freedom Writers also includes some of the elements from a popular DC television show called “City at Peace.” The film’s title refers to multiracial civil rights activists who challenged a 1961 Supreme Court decision requiring interstate bus desegregation. Tracey Durning, a journalist, presented the basic idea for the film.
Who is also driving the creation of a documentary series about Erin Gruwell for ABC’s “Primetime Live” news program. Tracey worked on the movie project as a co-executive producer, and it was dedicated to the memory of Armand Jones. The latter was slain shortly after the production of Freedom Writers.
