Directed by Tom McGrath, Megamind is the second animated movie of the Dreamworks Production House. Dreamworks is known for its sweet, satisfying, witty and pops culture-induced comedies. The film too falls in this category. The film provided super quality 3D effects. They had also been successful in roping a superb voice overcast.
This was the second movie released in 2010, which told the story from the villain’s point of view(the other one being ‘Despicable Me). The story follows two people-one, Metro Man and the other Megamind. They both have a superhero origin story, their planet getting destroyed, and they are sent on earth to fend for themselves. At the same time, Metro Man has great superhero powers and is celebrated as a superhero and the protector of humankind. Megamind is weak and blue, and his only superpower is his high intellect.
What Do The Critics Have To Say?
Megamind is, to date, one of the best-animated series. The emotionally complex characters also make it a fun watch for the adults. The movie enjoys a decent rating of 7.3 on IMDb and a whopping 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. Roger Ebert.com compliments the films clever dialogues and calls it a family entertainer. Even though The Guardian calls it a good watch, it feels that film lacks its passion compared to its contemporaries like The Incredibles or Toy Story.
Should You Skip It Or Stream It?
Megamind falls on a few of the best-animated movies of all time. If it weren’t for the Toy Story franchise, Megamind would be my favourite. And why not? It’s funny, the animation is vivid, it has a great storyline with a good message and stupendous voice overcast. I would deduct marks on originality since the entire universe is almost loosely based on the Superman universe.
Despite that, Megamind stands out in the universe of animated superheroes/villains. Roxanne has not been reduced to your typical ‘damsel in distress. Minion and Megamind also make a sweet villain and sidekick couple. He gets his own mini-story One very remarkable thing about the movie story is that it’s not the typical bad guy turns good and bad guy turns bad.
Metro Man gets tired and retires, showing that superheroes are humans too and they too get tired continuously saving us from our misdeeds and carelessness. In my opinion, STREAM IT! It’s a must-watch and definitely worth your time. The movie possesses high morals and deep when it’s talking about the more significant things in life like fate and free will, nature vs nurture and identity and entitlement. Although a 2010 release, the movie still stands relevant in 2022.
