There is an underground research laboratory of one of the biggest companies of the 21st century, Umbrella Corporation in Raccoon city. The location of the Hive is kept hidden from the world. The company is wrongly believed by the world to be involved in the IT and pharmaceutical products operation.
In reality, the company deals in manufacturing and trading different contagious and deadly biological weapons, especially viral weaponry, to the military and the black markets around the world. Many of the employees of the company are clueless about their actual work and its source of income. The research facility of Umbrella Corporation in Raccoon city is called the Hive.
The story begins with a thief stealing a few biomechanical bottle capacitors, which contains experimental T-virus. To escape, the thief smashed a capsule and released it in the laboratory to cause chaos. As soon as the T-virus is released, and the entire premise started getting contaminated, the thief somehow managed to run away.
However, little did he know that the supercomputer that controlled the Hive has its defense system. This intelligent system was given the name “Red Queen.” Thus, as soon as it senses the release of T-Virus in the laboratory, it generates an alarm system that closes all Hive doors. The entire staff is locked inside the cabins and succumbed after the release of water and gas. Even the thief fell unconscious on the train because of the gas released.
Moreover…
The scene then shifts to a huge mansion where Alice (Milla Jovovich) is waking up exhaustively. As she woke up, she couldn’t remember anything of the past. In her effort to connect with what was going on, she walks around exploring the mansion when Matt Addison finds her. Matt tried to hide Alice saying that she’s in danger.
As they try to escape, they are caught by a group of commandos led by James Shade. Alice and Matt are cuffed but soon released when Matt claims to be a cop. With Alice’s help, the group and Matt proceed to the Hive from a secret entrance from the mansion.
As soon as they enter, they spot another amnesiac, Spence, on the train. The scenario is clarified when commandos explain that Alice and Spence are Umbrella employees and guard the secret entrance to the Hive. They also explain that they also belong to the same company and save the people inside and seal the Hive thereafter.
On entering the research facility, the group becomes aware of the intentions of the Red Queen and her order over the place. 4 of the commandos, including Shade, are killed by the Red Queen’s laser defense system. Anyhow, Kaplan, with the help of another supercomputer, successfully deactivates the Red Queen. All of the doors of the Hive opened as Red Queen lost control. The people inside the doors were found to have turned into zombies due to the T-virus spread through the Hive. All the commandos, Matt, Spence, and Alice, try to save themselves from the Zombified employees and isolate themselves in a closed room.

Spence then planned to steal those biomechanical tubes and sell them in the Black markets to make a good profit.
Spence tried stealing the tubes and released one in the Hive to escape easily in an attempt to execute his plan. After regaining their memories, Alice gets into a fight with Spence, but Spence, in an attempt to save himself, manages to escape from the room by locking others inside.
