  • Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
  • Writer: Paul W.S. Anderson
  • Stars: Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Ryan McCluskey
  • IMDb: 6.7/10

Written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the first part of the Resident Evil series is released with the name ‘Resident Evil.’ Starring Milla Jovovich as the leading role in the film, this film depicts a conspiracy that led to the destruction of Raccoon City.

PLOT

The first film of Resident Evil movie is based on an unusual conspiracy in a fictitious city called Raccoon city of United States. There is an underground research laboratory of one of the biggest companies of the 21st century, Umbrella Corporation in Raccoon city. The location of the Hive is kept hidden from the world. The company is wrongly believed by the world to be involved in the IT and pharmaceutical products operation. In reality, the company deals in manufacturing and trading different contagious and deadly Biological weapons, especially viral weaponry, to the military and the black markets around the world. Many of the employees of the company are clueless about their actual work and its source of income. The research facility of Umbrella Corporation in Raccoon city is called the Hive.

The story begins with a thief stealing a few biomechanical bottle capacitors, which contains experimental T-virus. To escape, the thief smashed a capsule and released it in the laboratory to cause chaos. As soon as the T-virus is released, and the entire premise started getting contaminated, the thief somehow managed to run away. However, little did he know that the supercomputer that controlled the Hive has its defense system. This intelligent system was given the name “Red Queen.” Thus, as soon as it senses the release of T-Virus in the laboratory, it generates an alarm system that closes all Hive doors. The entire staff is locked inside the cabins and succumbed after the release of water and gas. Even the thief fell unconscious on the train because of the gas released.

The scene then shifts to a huge mansion where Alice (Milla Jovovich) is waking up exhaustively. As she woke up, she can’t remember anything of the past. In her effort to connect with what was going, she walks around exploring the mansion when Matt Addison found her. Matt tried to hide Alice saying that she’s in danger. As they tried to escape, they are caught by a group of commandos led by James Shade. Alice and Matt are cuffed but soon released when Matt claims to be a cop. With Alice’s help, the group and Matt proceed to the Hive from a secret entrance from the mansion. As soon as they enter, they spot another amnesiac, Spence, on the train. The scenario is clarified when commandos explain that Alice and Spence are Umbrella employees and guard the secret entrance to the Hive. They also explain that they also belong to the same company and save the people inside and seal the Hive thereafter.

On entering the research facility, the group becomes aware of the intentions of the Red Queen and her order over the place. 4 of the commandos, including Shade, are killed by the Red Queen’s laser defense system. Anyhow, Kaplan, with the help of another supercomputer, successfully deactivates the Red Queen. All of the doors of the Hive opened as Red Queen lost control. The people inside the doors were found to have turned into zombies due to the T-virus spread through the Hive. All the commandos, Matt, Spence, and Alice, try to save themselves from the Zombified employees and isolate themselves in a closed room.

It’s when Alice regained her memory, and she remembered that she’s also an employee of the company and was working with her partner, Lisa. Lisa, who was Matt’s sister, has planned to disclose the secrets of this Hive to the world to stop the company from continuing its illegal operations. Lisa has asked Alice to provide her with a tube of T-virus to help with her plan. Little did they know that Spence heard their conversation. Spence then planned to steal those biomechanical tubes and sell them in the Black markets to make a good profit.

Spence tried stealing the tubes and released one in the Hive to escape easily in an attempt to execute his plan. After regaining their memories, Alice gets into a fight with Spence, but Spence, in an attempt to save himself, manages to escape from the room by locking others inside. But, on his way outside, he was bitten by the zombies. Spence was carrying a briefcase that contains the antidote, and thus he tries to inject it into his body but was killed by the Licker at that time. Licker was Umbrella’s experimentation creature created by the. After some, Alice and others reached the train too and were attacked by the Licker, but they managed to kill it. In the process, Matt was attacked by the Licker, and its wound increases till the time Alice and Matt arrived back at the mansion. Alice tries to inject an antidote into Matt to save him, but she was stopped by the scientists who suddenly walked in. Matt and Alice were separated.

In the next scene of the movie, Alice first woke up in the hospital. Soon after escaping, she realizes that the place is destroyed and contaminated. The movie ends with Alice holding a gun in the ruined streets of Raccoon City.

But the chaos is created when a civilian who was bitten by a zombie entered the crowd of civilians. Reckoning the situation going out of hand, the Umbrella forces leader, Chief Timothy Cain, decides to shut the bridge’s exits and leave civilians on their own.

When Valentine and her former partner, Wells Payton, hides at a place while saving civilians’ and their own lives, and were joined by a news reporter, Terri Morales, they were attacked by Licker monsters, and it’s when Alice reaches on the spot to rescue them with a shotgun in her hand.

Dr. Ashford hacks into the city’s CCTV to locate Angela. He tried locating survivors near Angela who can help him. When he spots Alice and her companions on the camera, he contacts them and offers to help them if they can locate his daughter and take her to him. Alice and Valentine and news reporter Morales tried reaching Angela’s location, but Umbrella deploys their deadly experimental creature, Nemesis, on their way. Alice tries to fight Nemesis separately, while Valentina rescued Angela with Olivera’s help, and Morales was killed on the way.
