Dear John Plot

The story is about a US Army sergeant named John Tyree. He meets Savannah, a college student, while on vacation. She asks John to a party, where he meets a boy with autism named Alan. They go out together in the weeks that follow and fall in love. When John gets into a fight, Alan gets hurt by accident. Because of this, Savannah is mad at him. This problem is solved, though, with the help of Tim, Alan’s dad. Before John comes back, they decide to keep seeing each other. They promise to write to each other.

They plan to move in together when John gets out of the Army. But after the 9/11 attacks, John asks to stay in Iraq longer. In the meantime, Savannah decides to work with kids who have autism. She breaks up with John in a letter. John was shot while on a mission in Afghanistan in 2003.

After four years, John is sent to live with his stroke-stricken father. In a few days, his father died. John finds out that Savannah has tied the knot with Tim. Tim tells him that Savannah still loves him, but they haven’t been back together yet.

After being out of the Army for a few months, John meets her. Now that Tim is gone, he meets Savannah at a coffee shop and hugs her. And they meet again.

Dear John Cast

Dear John Filming Locations

Charleston is where the movie was shot. South Carolina has a city called Charleston. Nicholas’s movie The Notebook was also filmed in this lovely city. Oak Island, Edisto Island, and Sullivan’s Island were also very important places. The famous Isle of Palms Pier is where John first sees Savannah in the scene where he meets her. This pier is a popular historic location and attracts tourists. It makes a beautiful frame for photos. So, it became a popular place to take pictures and shoot movies.

The College of Charleston was another historic place that was used. The director liked the college a lot. Savannah would write letters while sitting in the college’s Randolph Hall. This college was also used to film movies like Cold Mountain, The Notebook, and The Patriot.

It’s one of the oldest schools in the United States. The movie Dear John was also shot at the Citadel, a military college in South Carolina. When John got shot in the shoulder, he went to a German hospital to get help. In this hospital’s infirmary, this scene was filmed. When John was on a mission in Afghanistan, those scenes were filmed in Harleyville. With dust and smoke, the Lafarge Cement factory in Harleyville looked like a village in Afghanistan.

Savannah’s parents lived in the house was also filmed on Edisto Island at the Cassina Point Plantation. The first date between John and Savannah took place at the Bowens Island Restaurant. Many other places were changed to fit the needs of the script. So, an elementary school at the airport security checkpoint was turned into a cafe and a lobby. Also, the airlift scene took place at Charleston Air Force Base.
