Fantastic Beasts began as a solo film and was set up as a prequel to the Harry Potter franchise. It started with Newt Scamander, who collects information on the world’s most mythical animals as he travels across the globe. But things change, and what was supposed to be a fun-loving movie set in the world of Harry Potter wizarding world turns into the narrative set by the Harry Potter movies.
Newt, along with his loyal friends and ministries of magic, finds themselves in the war between Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore. It was all a part of a big story that was encouraged by the Harry Potter novels, but since then, it has grown bigger by many folds, which can now potentially rival the lengths of original Harry Potter movies.
How Many Movies Are There?
There are three Fantastic Beasts movies. The first movie that came out in 2016 was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The second one was Fantastic Beasts and The Crimes of Grindelwald, which came out in 2018, and the third movie was Fantastic Beasts and The Secrets of Dumbeldore, which is the latest movie and will be released in 2022.
All the events in each movie happen chronologically. David Yates has directed all three parts, and he also directed 4 final Harry Potter movies. J.K. Rowling wrote the first 2 Fantastic Beasts, and the third installment was written by Steve Kloves and J.K. Rowling, where Steve majorly wrote the screenplays. Steve also wrote screenplays for almost all Harry Potter movies except the 5th Harry Potter.
Will There Be A New Fantastic Beast Movie?
It is very highly unlikely that we will see a new Fantastic Beast movie after the release of The Secrets of Dumbledore. The first, 2nd, and 3rd movies both had mediocre responses, and it would’ve been great for the audience if Warner Bros. had stuck it to the trilogy, which was the plan all along. But, unfortunately, there is more reason than Fantastic Beasts 3 was the last adventure in the magical world, at least for a while.
Why Fantastic Beast 3 Is The Last Movie?
A major problem for the series is the revenue, and the movies have failed to gain good revenue at the box office since the last 2 installments. At the start, Fantastic Beasts was planned to have 5 movies in total, but Warner Bros planned to green-light the final 2 movies only if the 3rd movie gained a good reception at the box office. But unfortunately, the 3rd movie, The Secrets of Dumbledore, grossed around $396 million worldwide.
This collection is smaller than 2nd movie, The Crimes of Grindelwald. 3rd movie also holds the lowest gross on the opening weekend of any wizarding movie by a considerable margin. The movie had a budget of $200 million-plus in marketing expenses, and the gross collection has failed to break even. Besides this, the 2nd and 3rd Fantastic Beasts received similar mediocre reviews.
It was an improvement, but it had unnecessary fillers, a confusing plot, and low stakes. Johnny Depp’s trial was also a negative factor for the movie. However, critics admired Mads Mikkelsen’s character as Gellert Grindelwald. Warner Bros has not given the green light yet is surely a sign of worry. It is highly likely that Warner Bros saw the response to the last movie and decided not to continue.
Whatever happens in the future, till then, it is safe to say that Fantastic Beasts 3 was the last movie from the magical world.
