In 1981, Feld Entertainment Chairman and CEO Kenneth Feld approached The Walt Disney Company to suggest an ice-skating show that would bring beloved Disney characters and music to fans worldwide. Opening to sold-out crowds in the New Jersey Meadowlands, Feld’s creation, Walt Disney’s World On Ice, was an immediate success. Now known as Disney On Ice, the production has had some magical milestones.
A Global Phenomenon
After several successful productions in the United States, Disney On Ice made its international debut in 1986. “Happy Birthday Donald” thrilled audiences in Japan, proving that Disney On Ice was a global phenomenon. Since then, Disney On Ice has staged productions in 68 countries, six continents, and in more than 41 languages. There are eight to 11 Disney On Ice productions on tour at any given time.
A Talent Showcase
As the world’s largest employer of professional figure skaters, Disney On Ice is a premier showcase for figure-skating talent. Linda Fratianne, a figure skating World Champion and Olympic medalist, was a featured performer in the first Walt Disney’s World On Ice show and would appear in productions for the next 10 years. In interviews, she’s stated that it was her dream job as someone who grew up visiting Disneyland.
It’s no wonder that other Olympic medalists, including Katarina Witt and Phillippe Candeloro, have toured with Disney On Ice. Not only do they get to thrill audiences around the world, but they get to work with industry legends like choreographer Cindy Stuart.
