As per many news sources like Digital Spy, serial killers’ fans will have to wait. How long? That question is hard to answer. But, as per the reports in April 2021, if to be believed, the negotiations between producer David Fincher and Netflix started for Mindhunter season 3.

In January 2020, Netflix reported that season three was on hold indefinitely, partly due to David Fincher’s schedule. However, there is hope for Mindhunter season three, as there are whispers and expectations for the same.

Initially, Fincher’s side was planning a five seasons’ series, and he was not done telling the story. In one of Variety’s interviews, Fincher said that he would love to revisit and complete the series ending it in the late 90s or early 2000s.

When asked about the indefinite hold and whether he will return for a possible season 3, Jonathan Groff compared Fincher to the (1997-1998) Chicago Bulls, calling the latter the general manager while trusting his vision and instincts. He will totally follow what his general manager believes in.

How Many Episodes will be There in Mindhunter Season 3?

The first season of the series debuted with ten episodes. Season two had one less, that is, nine episodes. Therefore, the viewers and fans can expect more or less the same number of episodes as the previous seasons.

Two FBI agents, Holden Ford and Bill Tench (portrayed by the talented Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany), are fighting against the system of identifying the killer having Means, Motive, and Opportunity, which comes with an attached stigma of being called backroom boys in the early days of the 1970s.

The backroom boys try to expand upon the modus operandi of these killers by including psychology, anthropology, and sociology. They know that criminal behavior is changing from need and greed to reasons that are incomprehensible and irrational.

They develop theories using psychological evaluation that put forward new questions. Their asking of the reason for crime will lead to the criminal. This series focuses on two agents developing a new field of investigating a crime with the help of sociopathic minds.

Season 1

In season one, a frustrated FBI hostage negotiator, Agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), finds himself allying with Agent Bill Tench (Holt McCallany). Both of them start studying a new subtype of the murderer, that is, serial killers.

They move forward with the research, and Holden has a close encounter with Ed Kemper and reaches a dead end with him. Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), a psychologist working for the Behavioral Science Unit, joins and aids Holden and Bill. Their insight into the case leads to an arrest.

In Pennsylvania, Holden Ford and Bill Tench investigating a baffling case led to numerous clues and an equally bewildering amount of suspects. Both men struggle in the courtroom when they cannot explain their findings in the Altoona case.

Wendy Carr joins the team permanently. She and Bill try to expand the team by holding interviews for a fourth member. Holden grows bold with his technique while he is interviewing Richard Speck. This creates a difference of opinions in the team.

This method kicks off an internal probe. In the in-house review, the team cracks. Holden is most affected by putting everything at risk: his career, relationships, and health.

Season 2

In season 2, changes are happening at the BSU, which finally takes hold of Holden due to his encounter with Ed Kemper. While solving the case to catch BTK Killer, Bill and Holden interview the Son of Sam, aka David Berkowitz.

The latter makes a startling confession about the BTK Killer. Bill witnesses a horrifying crime that his adopted son also witnesses. Wendy leaves the backseat and conducts her first interview. Bill faces quite a crisis in his personal life which gets splashed when he and Holden interview serial killer Charles Manson.

The FBI takes charge and sends the team to Atlanta to investigate the case of children who were missing and murdered. Wendy starts questioning her own methods.

Due to red tape, Holden is not able to limit his suspects. The final investigation focuses on one suspect who is very talented at exploiting a charged environment to his absolute advantage. The season ends with failing to resolve the case of the BTK Killer.
