What Happens in the Film?
Aristocrat Victoria Everglot and the abused son of a nouveau riche fish merchant, Victor Van Dort, prepare for their arranged marriage in an unnamed Victorian town where Victor’s parents will gain social standing and Victoria’s family will gain wealth. The nervous Victor sets Lady Everglot’s dress on fire during their wedding rehearsal, despite falling in love instantly.
In a nearby forest, he practices his vows by tying his ring to a trunk. Victor, as well as her children, are whisked away to the Land of the Dead by Emily, the finger of a dead woman who claims to be Victor’s wife.

In the Land of the Dead, Victor is dragged back to the Land of the Dead after Emily discovers them before they can share a kiss. Her parents do not believe her and assume Victor has abandoned her. Victor quickly tells Victoria of the situation, but both of them are skeptical. At the rehearsal, Lord Barkis Bittern, who is presumed to be wealthy, appears and proposes to marry her against her will.
As Victor prepares to drink Emily’s poison, Victoria follows everybody to their wedding until Emily uses her power to stop him, denying Victoria her chance to live peacefully ever after next to him. Victoria is kidnapped just after Emily reunites Victor with her. He is also Emily’s former fiancé and murderer, making Emily recognizes his face.
Emily saves Victor’s life when Victor engages Barkis in a duel to protect Victoria. With Emily now free from torment, Victor is no longer bound by his vows to speak to her. Victor returns his ring and throws his bouquet to Victoria, free from Emily’s torment.
