The latest American sci-fi, Dune: Part One, is inspired by the novel by Frank Herbert in the same name. The direction of this epic movie comes from Denis Villeneuve while joining him as the writers of the story are Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. The movie premiered on September 3 at the 78th Venice International Film Festival and has received critical acclaim.
The stars performing in the movie include names like Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and Dave Bautista.
All You Should Know Before Giving Dune A Watch
The story of Dune focuses on the journey of protagonist Paul Atreides (essayed by Timothee Chalamet), who, along with his family, is in pursuit of conquering a planet named Arrakis. The desert planet is valuable in containing a rare spice named melange. The story will show the unrest in Arrakis and the Atreides family.
This ain’t the first time that the movie is being adapted on the screen. Previously, the movie was first tried to be made by filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, but due to heavy production costs and long runtime, it was turned down.
However, the movie did manage to release in 1984, directed by David Lynch. But due to a tiff between Lynch and the movie’s producers, the former disowned the film despite the fact it managed to gather a cult status.
But this time around, Denis Villeneuve managed to cover half of the novel in the latest part of Dune and the remaining being left for the next part. This has been fairly a good move owing to its vast and complex storyline.
Is It Worth The Watch?
The movie can be safely said to be a must-watch for all the Dune fans, but whether it would be liked or not can be assured. So far, the movie has garnered a score of 77 on Metacritic while 86 by Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie has been praised largely for its great visuals, talented cast, and deep insight into the sci-fi genre. Timothee Chalamet has exceptionally handled his character very well and is the support of the film by minutely performing every detail of his role.
But there isn’t a striking difference between the latest and Lynch’s cult piece. However, it does manage to offer something for everyone, from a story to ponder to getting annoyed by it. But towards the end, the movie does begin to lose its grip and leaves the viewers utterly puzzled.
Where To Watch Dune?
The movie will be available to watch both in theatres and HBO Max (just like the typical Warner Bros 2021 movie schedule) simultaneously from October 21, 2021. It became available for streaming at 6:01 p.m. ET on HBO Max and will be available on the same for the duration of a month. Post that film will be removed from the network and will adopt the usual home media schedule.
However, if one desires to enjoy the movie ad-free, then membership of HBO Max can be availed at $14.99 a month.
Is There A Sequel Planned For Dune?
Till now, no official announcement has been out on the making of part two of Dune by Warner Bros. It is likely that the studio is waiting for its performance at the box office as well as its streaming potential on HBO Max. If everything goes well, then greenlight can be given to the next part.
However, the same-day release of the movie in theatres and HBO Max in the US might affect its overall ratings, and consequently, its further making. Thus, the coming weeks will be crucial to determine the fate of Dune part two.
But presuming if everything goes well with the current part, then the sequel cannot be expected anytime before 2023. The second part of the movie will cover the remaining story of the first novel of the series by Frank Herbert. So much so that even further sequels can also be made with the remaining books in the series. If everything goes well with the first two parts of the movie, then the third part can be based on the second book Dune Messiah.
Thus, these all are just mere possibilities, and nothing confirmed can be said as of now. It will all depend on the performance of the first part of the movie.
