The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, won millions of hearts despite its one season on the air. The series was an expansive prequel to 1982, Jim Henson movie. The film’s appreciated widely for its innovative approach. Even then it took Thra four decades to return back on screen. And now it seems the wait will begin once again.
The reason for that is the sudden cancellation of the series by Netflix. And were ready to take on Skeksis. Unfortunately, they might no longer get the opportunity. Understandably fans are despondent following the announcement, with many wondering the true reason behind the show’s cancellation.
The Dark Crystal: Reason About Its Cancellation?
Age of Resistance made its debut on Netflix as the prequel to 1982 The Dark Crystal. Premiering in 2019, the show aimed to further explore the world of Thra. And going by the response Season one received, fans seemed to love the show. With the series even bagging an Emmy. That makes this announcement, just a day after winning the award, even more bizarre.
The cancellation of the show points out to be a culmination of several reasons, with the most pressing being its sheer budget. The show had an eye for detail and was repulsed by the idea of CGI. That meant using hundreds of puppets, several dozens set and puppeteers. Adding to it the vast time requirement for production, a much clear picture is shown. Netflix has not been keen on releasing the viewership of the show. But it must not have been much, considering the drastic decision from them. Ultimately the show proved to be too big a risk.
Even then, the divorce between the show’s creators and Netflix have been cordial. With Netflix releasing the following statement- “We are grateful to the master artists at the Jim Henson Company for bringing The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance to life for fans around the world.” However, fans are bound to get excited about the comments by Lisa Henson. With her assuring the fans of continuing the story in future. Just when that might be is very much in the dark.
The Dark Crystal: What Was It About?
The series took much inspiration from the story of the original film. Of course, it was about Jen trying to restore balance to his world by upsetting Skeksis. To do so, he had to restore back to power the mighty Crystal. The job was not easy, and the adventures were entertaining. In the same vein, Rian, Brea, and Deet discover the secrets of Skeksis. They realise the threat and seeks to unite the Gelflings in a rebellion.
The story certainly had a lot more to offer. With fans are completely into the story, especially the surreal world of Thra. But of course, that will have to wait for now. With Season two of the show cancelled, it might be another long wait for the story to return. Although Lisa’s statement seems to be very optimistic, fans are genuinely concerned about the series’ future.
