A famous American historical drama movie from the year 2014 called the imitation game is an excellent piece of work by director Morten Tyldum and writer Graham Moore. The story of the film takes is inspiration from the 1983 biography of Alan Turing at goes by name “Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges.” The film features lead British actor Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of Alan Turing, the man behind the successful description of German intelligence messages for the British government at the time of World War II.

The credits for the screenplay of this film go to Graham Moore. Coming from the book by Andrew Hodges, the film has been produced by Nora Grossman, Ido Ostrowsky, and Teddy Schwarzman. For those wondering where did the movie get its title, the movie’s title is the name of the game that cryptograph analyst Alan Turing offered for providing a solution to the question “Can machines think?”.

It was in 1950 in his seminal paper called “Computing Machinery and Intelligence”, that he adopted this name. Alongside Cumberbatch, we get to see actors in supporting roles such as Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, and Mark Strong.

Release and Success of The Imitation Game

The film had its cinematography done by Óscar Faura and editing by William Goldenberg. The music credits go to Alexandre Desplat. The film has a few production companies to list, namely, Black Bear Pictures, Bristol Automotive, and Orange Corp, and was distributed by The Weinstein Company.

The film was launched on August 29, 2014, at the Telluride Film Festival and made it to the theatre screens on November 28, 2014, in the United States. The movie runs for a total of 114 minutes in the English Language and received appreciation from a majority of the audience as it successfully made $233.6 million at the box office.

Awards and Recognition:

Post its release, The Imitation Game went on to become the highest-grossing independent movie of 2014. It got 8 nominations at the 87th Academy Awards, with victory in the Best Adapted Screenplay category, 5 nominations at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, and 3 nominations at the 21st Screen Actors Guild Awards. The movie also got 9 BAFTA nominations and won the People’s Choice Award at the 39th Toronto International Film Festival.

Cast and Characters

The Imitation Game

The movie shows lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch playing the cryptanalyst-mathematician Alan Turing. Accompanying him we see Keira Knightley as Joan Clarke, Matthew Goode in the role of Hugh Alexander, Rory Kinnear as Detective Robert Nock, and Allen Leech as John Cairncross.

The cast list further includes Matthew Beard, Charles Dance, Mark Strong, and James Northcote in the respective roles of Peter Hilton, Commander Denniston, Stewart Menzies, and Jack Good. Other roles have Tom Goodman-Hill, Steven Waddington, Ilan Goodman, and Jack Tarlton. We also get to see a young Alan Turing being played by child artist Alex Lawther.
