Downsizing Ending Explained
Films with mini-people is always interesting. From Gulliver’s Travels to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids to even superheroes Ant-Man and Atom, the small world will always fascinate you. Today, we are holding up a similar film to you: Downsizing.
The 2017 American sci-fi comedy has won our hearts ever since its release, with the amazing performance from Matt Damon, Christopher Waltz, Hong Chau and Kristen Wiig. We have seen small people living secretly or people becoming accidentally small, but this time, we see people becoming small ta save mankind from global extinction. Who thought being small could be a better way of living?
What is the film Downsizing about?
The film follows the life of Paul, who had to go through the downsizing program alone, after his wife back out at the last minute and left him eventually. Financially struggling, Paul soon finds life is more less the same even if you are small, just the consumption of everything is comparatively lesser. A year later, he even started dating again, but backfired.
One day after a wild party at a neighbor’s house, Paul meets a woman Ngoc Lan Tran, who was locked up and downsized against her will, and somehow managed to escape to Leisureland, the place for downsized people. She belongs to a small economy, and that’s where the story starts developing as Paul realizes the various aspects of mankind and how somethings never change. He eventually realizes even the community has many benefits; humans will always be doomed.
He eventually discovers that the human race is going to be extinct soon due to too much use of the resources and global phenomena like pollution and global warming. Not even downsizing can help now, as the method was invented very late and only three percent of the population has joined the program as of now. There is way though: living in an underground vault until the atmosphere resets itself. What will Paul do?
What happened in the end?
Paul finds out that the human race will soon become extinct, and not even the downsizing program can save anyone. He had initially chosen to live out in the underground vault . He did for the future human race can rise up when the outside conditions become stable. However, he was disheartened when Ngoc Lan would instead stay with the people . They are going to need her more. He enters the vault alone, again, but this time changes his mind at the last minute and steps out of the door before it closed. He chose to stay with Ngoc Lan and is later seen to be helping her with serving the people in the slums of Leisureland.
