"The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent" Movie Review

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent depicts Nicolas Cage as himself. This is hardly a major career shift. Reportedly, Nic Cage has portrayed himself for four decades. Part of the enjoyment of a Nic Cage film is particularly genre fare such as Face/Off. Another instance is when Mandy, is filling in the bingo card of Cage-ian acting tropes. It is described as ‘the weird, lurching emphasis’ on random lines.

Memes titled “Cage rage” cite Nicolas Cage’s most violent actions and exaggerate them for grotesque humorous effect. Cage has voiced his displeasure with the “Cage rage” description of his acting technique. He is claiming that it is simple and belittles the expertise he brings to each performance.

Given that and his performance in Pig from the previous year, Cage’s decision to feature in this film appears weird. Nic Cage is employed by US secret services to spy on a wealthy fan while collaborating with the suspect on a dialogue-driven, character-driven screenplay. Or, by adopting Cage-like stereotypes, he may eventually surpass them.

Cage can only find peace in his private life with his happily divorced wife Olivia (Sharon Horgan) and his anxious 16-year-old daughter Addy by retiring from the film industry (Lily Mo Sheen). Given that the Cage character in this new film is an exaggerated clown who supports a “nouveau shamanic” style to acting, the film is likely appealing because it is both a parody of Hollywood’s egos and excesses and a love letter to them.
