Adapted from Frank Herbert’s best-selling sci-fi novel and directed by Denis Villeneuve, ‘Dune’ is a harrowing tale that involves multiple planets, thousands of years, and a fascinating space opera plot. Not only does the famously challenging to adapt movie star talented and well-established actors like Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, etc. but also the soundtrack will be done by Hans Zimmer (Interstellar, Inception, The Lion King, The Dark Knight Rises, Pirates of the Caribbean and more), one of the most skilled composers of our time.
The story will circle the adventures of the brilliant and gifted Paul Atreides, a young aristocrat born on the planet of Caladan. When Paul’s father, Duke Leto Atreides, agrees to supervise the mining operations on Arrakis, aka Dune, the most dangerous planet in the universe, Paul’s life takes a jerking turn. As the Atreides family moves to Dune, Paul realizes his ‘messiah’ status and what he must do to protect his family and the entire galactic society.
Planet Dune has the most valuable resource of all, a Spice called melange, which gives humans special abilities, allows them to travel anywhere faster than the speed of light, and lengthens human life. Here he meets the beautiful blue-eyed Chani, who later becomes his partner, belonging to the Fremen tribe.
Official Release Date
Dune is set to hit theatres on October 22, 2021, after delays because of the pandemic. Warner Brothers have also announced that it will be released on their streaming service HBO MAX the same day. Some directors, actors, and creatives aren’t too happy with this decision. The film will also premiere for critics at the Venice Film Festival, which begins on September 3, 2021, and at the Toronto International Film Festival the following week.
Two trailers and numerous posters detailing the beautifully layered plotline of the film have been released.
Dune 2 is Already in the Works
This will be the first time that a Dune adaptation will be split into two parts. Director Denis Villeneuve believes that one film is not enough to completely conform the books and explore the deadly desert planet of Dune. Villeneuve has already started writing Part Two and is very thankful for the opportunity to bring the beloved series to screen. The initial two films will only cover the first book in Herbert’s five-part series. The director assures us that Dune Part 2 will most certainly be released, given that Part 1 will not be a box office failure. According to Villeneuve, it has also been expected that Zendaya will have a much more significant role in the second film.
