The 2022 comedy-drama directed and written by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (also known as “Daniels”) was released on March 11, 2022, at the SXSW. A few days later, on March 25, 2022, it was released in the United States. The movie was co-produced by the Russo brothers and Daniels.
The story revolves around a Chinese American woman audited by the Internal Revenue Service and discovers that she must connect to the various multiverse versions of herself to stop a powerful being from destroying the multiverse.
The characters
The show stars Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn Quan Wang, a laundromat owner, Stephanie Hsu as Joy Wang / Jobu Tupaki, Evelyn and Waymond’s daughter, we see Ke Huy Quan as Waymond Wang, Evelyn’s husband.
Jenny Slate as Debbie the Dog Mom or “Big Nose.” A thing to note here is how the character’s real name, “Big Nose,” was changed for its digital release because of its association with Jewish stereotypes (Jews are often stereotyped and shown as people with big hook noses.)
In the movie, we also see harry Shum Jr. as Chad, a teppanyaki chef working alongside Evelyn in an alternate universe. James Hong as Gong Gong, Jamie Lee Curtis as Deirdre Beaubeirdre, an IRS inspector.
There are a few more appearances, like Tallie Medel, who appears as Becky Gregor, Joy’s girlfriend; Biff Wiff, appearing as Rick, a laundromat customer.
Sunita Mani appears as TV Musical Queen; Aaron Lazar appears as TV Musical Soldier; Audrey Wasilewski and Peter Banifaz appear as Alpha RV Officers; Daniel Scheinert appears as District Manager, and Andy Le and Brian Le appear as Alpha Trophy Jumpers.
The themes of the movie
The movie corresponds to various genres like science fiction, fantasy film, black comedy, martial arts film, and animation film. In addition, the film explores the themes of nihilism and the search for the meaning of life.
The critics have been talking about how one of the versions of Evelyn—a famous martial arts movie star—is a portrayal of Yeoh herself.
