They revealed the series for the first time in October 2009, after the news that Nickelodeon’s parent company, Viacom, had acquired the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand. It was part of Nickelodeon’s effort to refresh two existing brands for new viewers, along with the development of new Winx Club episodes for girls by Nickelodeon Animation Studio. The boys aged 6 to 11 years old were the target audience.
In the months preceding the premiere, Nickelodeon and Playmates Toys released merchandise with the new character designs. The two-part premiere aired on September 28 and September 29, 2012, with 3.9 million viewers. The debut ratings for a Nickelodeon animated series were the highest since 2009, resulting in the series’ October renewal for a second season. The fifth and final season, rebranded as Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, has debuted on Nickelodeon’s sister channel Nicktoons.
The series premiered on YTV in Canada on September 29, 2012. The show premiered on Nickelodeon in the United Kingdom and Ireland on October 1, 2012. Nickelodeon broadcast the pilot episode in Australia and New Zealand on October 8, 2012. The first episode aired on Nickelodeon Canada on September 2, 2013. It was initially broadcast on Nickelodeon and Sonic in India in 2013, and Nick HD+ has been showing it since 2014.
Hamato Yoshi (Splinter), while traversing Manhattan with his four pet turtles, encounters members of the Kraang, an alien race. Mutagen, an alien material, is utilized as a weapon against Yoshi and the turtles, and when it comes into touch with living animals, the Kraang undergoes drastic physical changes. Yoshi changes into a brown rat, and the turtles become humanoid creatures. Yoshi retreats to the sewers of New York City with his four boys, which he names after turtles.
The turtles are unable to contain a mutation outbreak produced by the invasion’s residual mutagen. When a misunderstanding leads to Kirby’s death as a consequence of the virus, April severed her relationship with the turtles. They do not earn her forgiveness until they protect her against Karai, who is momentarily in control of the Foot. Casey Jones, April’s new friend, assists her in defending the turtles’ lair from an assault. When Donatello ultimately creates another Kraang chemical, retro-mutagen, which permits organic beings to reverse their fundamental physical alterations, Kirby transforms back into his human form.
Viacom stated on October 21, 2009, that it had acquired the entire Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise from Peter Laird. It will produce a 2012 CGI-animated television series for its Nickelodeon family of channels. According to the announcement, Paramount Pictures would produce the picture (a Viacom company) and it will release in August 2014. In the May 2011 issue of The Licensing Book, Nickelodeon unveiled concept art for all four turtles as well as new Winx Club artwork. The Nickelodeon Animation Studio worked concurrently on both shows.
