Is Orphan Based On A True Story?
But what makes the film Orphan interesting is that it is based on a real-life story of a woman named Barbora Skrlová. The woman’s true identity came out after she was found disguised as a 13 years old teenage boy after she ran away from a family where she was found to be practicing extreme child abuse on other children of the family.
Barbora Skrlová was a 33 years old Czech woman who got involved in crime for the first time in the Czech Republic when she lived with Klara and Katerina Mauerova, the two sisters and two children of Klara. And it was easier for Barbora to get into the family by easily manipulating Klara, who suffered from a mental illness and lived separated from her husband.
With time the accuser became so controlling of the family that she began criticizing the two children of Klara for mistakes they did not make. She made the two sisters believe the boys were the culprits and deserved harsh punishment. The extent was so much that she made the two sisters lock the boys and deprive them of food. But soon, suspected child abuse, they informed the cops of the neighbors, which resulted in their sisters’ arrest.
Surprisingly, Barbora Skrlová escaped the situation by acting like a child. And soon after, when a teenage boy of a couple in the Czech Republic went missing, Skrlová stepped in to become the missing boy, and the parents eventually made him pose as their child till she escaped, and the entire scene came to light.
The Story Of Natalia Grace
And let us mention that this is not the only true story that the movie resembles. A decade after the release of the movie Orphan, a similar incident occurred when Indiana couple Kristine and Michael Barnett adopted a young Ukrainian girl named Natalia Grace, who suffered from impaired physical growth and difficulty in moving. But before she came into the family, she lived in the US for a couple of years, and her previous family left her for unknown reasons.
After Natalia’s entry, it soon became apparent that the girl was up to something fishy. Kristine reported that the girl even started threatening the family was way older than her appearance, which was revealed by tests that she possessed adult teeth and bone density with non-inclination for toys and a mature way of conversing.
The Barnetts then went on to legally change the age of Natalia on her birth certificate to 22 years old and made available the room for her to rent before they moved to Canada in 2013. And a year after, Natalia reported to them that her family had left her. They charged The family with felony neglect of a minor.
Kristine Barnett still believes that the girl is up to a big scam and specifically quoted the example of the Orphan movie in this regard. However, her estranged husband, Michael, claims they knew Natalia was a child and accused Kristine of convincing everyone to lie about her age. However, to date, Natalia’s age is the topic of debate.
