It’s all about making money: Collision
In Johannesburg, in a world after apartheid, an army veteran’s daughter is stuck in the trunk of a car belonging to a notorious crime boss. This is the first scene of the Collision, and then we go back in time two days to when the country is getting ready to celebrate freedom day, but someone asks if they are really free. We meet Bra Sol (Vayu Dabula), a local gangster.
At first, though, we see a good side of him when he tells a young boy to go to school instead of carrying a gun. On the other side, we meet the Greser family. The father, Johan Greser, is getting ready for his presentation to become CFO of the company, and the daughter, Nicki, is texting her boyfriend, Cecil.
There’s another father and daughter who run a shop together downtown in the city. Even though apartheid has ended in this world, there is still internal segregation. White people are afraid of Black people, and South Africans are afraid of people coming from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and other places.
This is what the movie is about. Bra Sol had been making deals with Johan behind the scenes, but he had lost money and told Johan about it. Nicki is friends with Cecil and his friend Thando. To make money, Cecil and Thando do small crimes for Bra Sol.
But when one thing leads to another, Bra Sol takes Nicki and plans to sell her as a prostitute overseas. That’s when the Greser family, Cecil, and Sol start running after Nicki to get her out of his trap before something bad happens. Will they be able to catch Sol before the shipment, or is something bad about to happen to the characters?
Race to Stay Alive In movie Collision
In the movie, everyone is trying to stay alive and make money. Be it Johan Greser, who wants to be promoted to CFO by any means, or Bra Sol, whose way of making money is wrong, but he wants to build schools for the kids in his neighborhood.
Cecil wants to be a singer, but he can’t find work because he is not from the United States. The downtown shop owner wants to open more stores because he doesn’t have enough money left over after paying taxes to Bra Sol.
In some ways, the movie tries to show the truth about Johannesburg, which is the economic center of Africa and a draw for people who want a better life. People from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Malawi, and other places move to the city hoping for a better life, but the city’s population of almost 10 million can’t give them any chances.
There is a big difference between the rich and the poor here. The rich live in big white mansions in the northern suburbs, while the poor, who are mostly black, are pushed to the south downtown. Because of the wealth gap, the poor feel like their few opportunities (land, jobs, etc.) are being taken away by immigrants, while the rich are left alone.
Now, getting back to the movie, the story has all of the above elements that help build the world around them, but the plot isn’t very good. What the filmmakers want to show is not clear. Is it a movie about a fight between two powerful people or a rivalry? Is it about getting back at someone or showing the harsh truth of the city and its people? Or about how freedom is a lie?
Last Thoughts: Should You Stream It or Not?
If you have better things to watch on Netflix, you should definitely skip the movie Collision. The movie has an uneven pace, a confusing plot, and terrible acting, especially from the character Nicki. All of these things make it a bad movie. Even though actor Vuyo Dabula is the only thing that makes the movie interesting, he can’t save it from being a movie with no plot. You can watch it if you like the actor, but you will be let down in the end.
