This approach allows “The Ancestral” to increase its eeriness via jump scares. There are eerie murmurs and noises emanating from inside the house, and Yen is sleepwalking. As the incidents worsen, it becomes more interesting to investigate who haunts the house and why.
Because of the film’s early beginnings. From playing hide-and-seek in the yard to seeing a ghost during karaoke, the scares are astounding and unsettling. A stunning surprise in the second half renders much of what has been learned or considered up to that point irrelevant, setting up a dramatic finale. In addition to a frenetic pace, the film has several admirable qualities.
“The Ancestral” has many flaws. The worst issue is the too familiar, repetitive format. After a disaster, the motif of a single parent raising children has been used several times. True for the added subplot in which the children believe the new adult will replace the deceased.
