The production studio Lionsgate is now undertaking the project to develop a prequel movie for The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games franchise had released its fourth installment titled “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2”, which culminated the movie series back in 2015. However, with the release of the prequel novel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” by Suzanne Collins in May 2020, Lionsgate had shown interest in adapting the novel as a part of the franchise. The plot of the prequel develops 64 years before the actual events in Hunger Games movies.

When will The Hunger Games Prequel Movie Release?

Lionsgate has greenlit the adaptation and subsequent production of the prequel to The Hunger Games. The production is set to initiate next year; however, the actual filming date is not set. The movie will have at its center the journey of young President Snow. The members of the production team from the previous Hunger Games franchise will return for the prequel. Francis Lawrence is helming the prequel and directing The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and the Mockingjay movies.

Michael Arndt will do the screenplay for the adaptation of Collins’ novel. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are producing the movie. Since the production is set to start next year, the release date is expected to fall between late 2023 and early 2024, according to Joe Drake, the current chairman of Lionsgate.

Is the Prequel Worth a Wait?

The events of the prequel will unfold decades before the plot of the original novels. However, since it will focus on Coriolanus Snow’s teen years before he becomes an antagonist and a criminal president of Panem, it will be worth watching how he becomes what he is now with the turn of events. At the young age of 18, Coriolanus carries a charm, and as his family goes through hard times, Coriolanus gets a chance to reverse his fortune by mentoring the Tenth Hunger Games.

However, his hopes are shattered as he gets assigned to mentor the girl tribute from the poor District 12. It will reward the viewers for following the journey of young Coriolanus as he will use his wits and charm to maneuver his way through the mentoring program. Every choice that he will make can either bring him to success or tragic ruin. However, despite his doomed tribute, Coriolanus harbors an ardent desire for survival, no matter whatever he has to do.

Who will be in the Cast of The Hunger Games Prequel Movie?

Since the movie will follow a different timeline, Katniss is not likely to appear in the movie. Jennifer Lawrence, who had played the iconic role of Katniss, had said in an interview in 2015 that they have already reached the end of the story of Katniss. Based on the novel, the familiar characters probably won’t make a return, nor will the same actors take up the role as the plot unfolds decades before the events of The Hunger Games.

Regardless, Hunger Games fans are anticipating the release of the prequel movie, which, according to Joe Drake, is “moving along really, really well.” Suzanne Collins’ The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will focus on the rise of the authoritarian President Coriolanus Snow, and the entire plot concept is a good catch which makes it worth a wait.
