Dialogues are the backbone of a movie because it is something that we can use in our day-to-day lives or find relatable. Sadness is an important part of our lives because, without its presence, we can not truly understand the meaning of happiness. It is a normal response, and sometimes we get too tense from it. It was difficult to make the list because there were so many quotes that were extremely famous.
However, we have gathered a small portion from the sea of sadness, and hence we present a list of 20 saddest movie quotes that you must check out:
1. The Green Mile
“I want it over and done. I do. I’m tired, boss. Tired of bein’ on the road, lonely as a sparrow in the rain. Tired of not ever having a buddy to be with or telling me where we were coming from or going to or why. Mostly I’m tired of people being ugly to each other. I’m tired of all the pain I feel and hear in the world every day. There’s too much of it. It’s like pieces of glass in my head all the time. Can you understand?” — John Coffey
This is one of the saddest movie quotes in The Green Mile, and arguably the most depressing quote from the movie, and one of the quotes that we would listen to and relate to while watching the movie because there are moments in our life when we have felt so lonely that we feel our backs are pushed against the wall, and we can’t do anything to change it. A great movie with hard-hitting dialogue
2. Girl, Interrupted
“I know what it’s like to want to die. How it hurts to smile. How you try to fit in but you can’t. And how you hurt yourself on the outside to try to kill the thing on the inside.” — Susanna
This is one of the most hard-hitting and depressing sad movie quotes from the movie Girl, Interrupted because people who have/ are suffering from depression would have suicidal tendencies, and they would constantly think about choosing death over life because that way it would not hurt them anymore. For them, it is hard to fit in because of their state of mind, and they can not socialize, and things get worse for them as the things they do which brought joy to them would simply feel monotonous and boring.
3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2
“Always.” — Professor Severus Snape
One word which hurts so much and the pain and heartache it carries can not be described with any combination or number of words. This infamous scene in Harry Potter was heartbreaking because, for the duration of the series, we thought of Professor Severus Snape as a wizard working for Voldemort, but in the final moments of the movie, we realize how amazing he was because he wanted to save Lily, Harry’s mother whom he loved so dearly and sadly he had to watch her die from Voldemort.
There are very few movies that have such heartbreaking one-line quotes that even after years of release, the movie has the impact, and fortunately, this movie by Warner Bros has the same impact and emotions, and we all shed tears whenever we watch this scene.
4. Me Before You
“Don’t think of me too often. I don’t want you getting sad. Just live well. Just live. I’ll be walking beside you every step of the way.” — Will
Me Before You is one of the best romantic drama movies out there, and this line said by the male protagonist would make you understand why it is so. This is a heartbreaking scene from the movie that gives out the sad movie quote because sometimes we tend to meet some people with whom we click however, that person does not stay in our lives, and even though it is sad and heartbreaking but we can not whine about it forever. All we can do is bid them goodbye and make them our favorite memory in the chapter of our life.
5. Kramer vs. Kramer
“You’re not gonna kiss me good night anymore, are you, Dad?” -Billy
This sad movie quote reminds people about the time when they were a kid and were afraid of the dark, and their father would come and give them a good night kiss. Even though this line from Kramer vs. Kramer does not sound too cool but it surely makes you think about being a baby boy.
6. The Shawshank Redemption
“Sometimes it makes me sad, though… Andy being gone. I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend.” -Red
The saddest thing about life is that sometimes we make friends who become an extended family, but the sad thing about life is that we tend to follow our goals and dream that we go overseas or go to a different city and lose contact with them. A part of you would be hurt, and you might cry when you talk or even think about it, but that is okay because that’s life. You will understand that neither of you is a kid anymore, and that is the ugly side of life.
7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
“What a beautiful place…to be with friends.”- Dobby
Dobby was one of the best characters in the Harry Potter series, and his death was the saddest and the most heartbreaking in the series because he was a slave when we were first introduced to him in the second movie, that is, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and in the movie despite being a slave, Harry treated him like a free man in the final moments of the movie he became free because of Harry’s efforts.
In his final moments, Dobby realized that miracles can happen, and he was lucky to die beside his friends, who were more like family to him.
8. The Lion King
“Long Live The King.” – Scar
This is one of the saddest quotes from one of our favorite childhood movies, The Lion King, and this is one of the lines in the movie that we still grieve over because we learned that betrayal comes from people close to us. And in this case, it was done by Scar, who said this to Mufasa, the king, and Simba’s dad and pushed him down the cliff.
This line still hurts the adults who saw the animated version of the film when they were kids, and many people were seen shedding tears during this, and they can not forget their childhood emotions. Both versions of the film were fantastic, but in my opinion, the original film was better; even though it did not showcase over-the-top animation but we used to enjoy watching the film with our friends and family.
9. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
“You’re the weak one. And you’ll never know love or friendship. And I feel sorry for you.” – Harry Potter
This quote was said by Harry Potter to Lord Voldemort during their final showdown at Hogwarts. Voldemort believed that the path to greatness and strength solely depended on having followers and not any love interest or friends, and that was the reason for his downfall. He realized this during his final moment because no matter how he tried, someone would come to his aid. Voldemort watched the Malfoys leave his side, and all his followers die.
It is hard to accept for some people that they are strong because they are independent and they can walk or visit anywhere because they are not bound by bonds that will haunt them.
10. Naruto
Forget about revenge. The fate of those who seek revenge is grim. It’s tragic, You will end up suffering and hurting yourself even more. Even if you do succeed in getting revenge, the only thing that remains is emptiness. – Hatake Kakashi
Kakashi is one of the coldest characters in Naruto, and he is one of the characters who has suffered the most he has a haunting past; his dad committed suicide, his friend died in the war, love killed him, and his master died during an attack in the village. He advised Sasuke, his student, to stop following the path of revenge to kill his brother, Itachi, who killed his family and the clan members.
He believes taking revenge is meaningless because when they will fulfill their task, it would not make them feel better and accomplished instead, it will make him feel worse, which will create a void in his life.
11. Magnolia
“I loved her so. And she knew what I did. She knew all the fucking stupid things I’d done. But the love… was stronger than anything you can think of. The goddamn regret. The goddamn regret! Oh, and I’ll die. Now I’ll die, and I’ll tell you what… the biggest regret of my life… I let my love go. What did I do? I’m 65 years old. And I’m ashamed. A million years ago… the fucking regret and guilt, these things, don’t ever let anyone ever say to you you shouldn’t regret anything. Don’t do that. Don’t! You regret what you fucking want! Use that. Use that regret for anything, any way you want. You can use it, okay? Oh, god. This is a long way to go with no punch. A little moral story, I say… Love. Love. -Earl Partridge
Another heartbreaking quote about regret and unrequited love. We all have been in love, right? But we love some people more than others, and we try to search for moments that will be perfect for expressing our feelings to them; sadly, that moment never arrives, and they leave our life with a goodbye. Honestly, it hurts a lot, and you will be stuck with a bitter feeling.
But if they use this feeling of bitterness in the right manner, it will change their lives for the better because it will continue to inspire and motivate them to be better people than what they were yesterday. It will be hard to accept reality, and you may stay awake more than a couple of nights talking to the moon, but that’s the beauty of life. It changes you for the better.
12. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
“Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love.” – Albus Dumbledore
Harry Potter is one of those movies that focuses on compassion, empathy, love, friendship, and many more human qualities that are lacking in this generation. As a matter of fact, people believe it is great not to show any sign of such qualities, and it is heartbreaking because people around us go through so much stuff, and such people would hurt them by being cold and indifferent people.
Such people should not be labeled as cool, instead, they should be pitied because such people would find it hard to have companions who will stand by them, and it will be hard for them to accept.
13. Bojack Horseman
“I Am In Pain, All The Time. My Whole Life. And You Have No Idea.” – Bojack Horseman
Bojack Horseman can be called the weirdest show, but the lines of this show are extremely relatable, and a lot of people search for and binge-watch this show. This sad movie quote from the show would be relatable to all the people who have clinical depression, and during this period, the person would feel lost. Being alive would hurt them, and they would search for an easy way out. Sadly, none of us would know because they choose to suffer in silence.
14. Toy Story
“But what if Andy gets another dinosaur, a mean one? I just don’t think I could take that kind of rejection!”- Rex
We are all afraid of being replaced by someone, and this sad movie quote from Rex in Toy Story perfectly describes it because we tend to find it hard to accept that we are not good enough for them, and it would hurt and destroy us emotionally because we can not imagine someone saying that they are not good enough for them. They try to change themselves so that they can fit into their image of idealism.
15. Avengers: Endgame
Steve Rogers: Tony, I’m going to need you to focus…
Tony Stark: I needed you, as in past tense. That trumps what you need. It’s too late, buddy. Sorry. Do you know what I need? Do you know what I need? I need a shave. I don’t believe I ever remember telling you this…
Tony Stark: What we needed was a suit of armor around the world! Remember that? Whether it impacted our precious freedoms or not, that’s what we needed!
Steve Rogers: Well, that didn’t work out, did it?
Tony Stark: I said we’d lose. You said, “we’ll do that together too.” Guess what, Cap? We lost, and you weren’t there. But that’s what we do, right? Our best work after the fact? We’re the Avengers? Not the Prevengers, right?
Tony Stark: No, no, here’s my biggest point, he said…
Tony Stark: Bunch of tired old wheels! I got nothin’ for you, Cap! I’ve got no coordinates, no clues, no strategies, no options! Zero, zip, nada. No trust – liar.
Tony Stark: Here, take this. You’ll find him, if you put that on. You hide…
Tony Stark and Steve Rogers had an explosive conversation after Tony returned to Earth to fight Thanos on a distant planet is nothing short of a sad movie quote. Steve visited Tony to have data on Thanos’ whereabouts and next step, but Tony snapped at Thanos because, during Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony suggested wrapping the world around his technology that would protect its people from any possible threat, but he was shut down by Steve Rogers and assured him that they would fight that threat together, and they would win or lose together.
16. Avengers Endgame
“I Went For The Head” – Thor
It haunted Thor for years when he struck Thanos in the chest with his new weapon; he was relieved that they had saved the day by defeating Thanos. But Thanos was not defeated, and he did the snap and advised Thor to have gone for the head. When they confronted Thanos after years, he decapitated him and coldly said the above quote.
17. I Want To Eat Your Pancreas
“You’re no longer here. I’ll learn to stand on my own two feet.”– Haruki Shiga
I Want To Eat Your Pancreas is one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking anime movies ever created, and this movie would change you. This was a beautiful movie and had excellent character development, and the above quote was said by Haruki Shiga because Sakura changed his life, making him a completely different person than he was at the beginning of the movie.
After her death, Haruki changed into a better and more caring person. Sakura’s death hurt Haruki, and he felt as if he had lost a part of himself, and he coped with the fact and started moving on and continued living his life for her sake.
18. I Want To Eat Your Pancreas
“For these past four months for the first time, I really lived. I existed in the world. It was all thanks to her. Because our souls touched each other.” -Haruki Shiga
Haruki Shiga was a boring person leading a boring and spontaneous life, and he was too afraid to hear from anyone because he could not make connections with anyone. But his life changed and turned upside down when he met Sakura, who turned Haruki’s boring life into a rollercoaster ride and made his black and white life into a colorful and bright one.
We all have been in a relationship with someone who has made our lives more beautiful, and it made us grateful that we got to meet them. They became the most important person in our life; they made our lives more entertaining and worthwhile.
19. 500 Days Of Summer
“Some people are meant to fall in love with each other. But, not meant to be together.”- Tom Hansen.
Tom initially had a big and flowery idea of love and his relationship with Summer because he thinks that they are going to last forever. However, Tom was devastated and heartbroken when things did not work out with Summer. He learned that the idea of ‘the one is not realistic, and it depends on the people to make it work.
500 Days Of Summer is a beautiful movie and unique romantic movie that showcases love the way love is in real life, and it does not sugarcoat love as we see in other movies. The movie has survived the test of time, and it is still found relevant in 2022 and tells its audiences that a breakup is not the end of the world and one can move on and be in love with someone.
20. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
“Albus Severus Potter, you were named for two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin, and he was probably the bravest man I ever knew.” — Harry Potter
Harry said this to his child when he was nervous about being in the Slytherin house; Harry motivated him by saying that he was named after the two headmasters of Hogwarts, and one of them was the bravest man who stood against Voldemort without any shred of fear.
This dialogue from Harry Potter marked the end of our childhood; this sad movie quote was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time because it felt as if we grew with each part of the movie where every kid learned something from the characters of the movie and gained traits unique relating to the four houses of Hogwarts.
