The plot was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with one key exception. The Jets and Sharks are not “both alike in dignity,” as the Montagues and Capulets were: the Jets are white, with a structural advantage over their Puerto Rican opponents, and this production, with consistent Latino casting for the Sharks, emphasizes the white cops’ tribal similarity to the Jets in a kind of co-belligerent neutrality.
