West Side Story 2.0, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a visceral act of ancestor worship: a beautifully conceived, masterfully adapted, and visually stunning revival. No one but Spielberg could have pulled it off, bringing Leonard Bernstein’s score and Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics to life like this. Spielberg has moved Mara’s egotistical I Feel Pretty from the wedding studio to a luxury department shop where she works as a cleaner.
Sondheim had second thoughts about this number because of its Cowardian scepticism. Its confection, on the other hand, is completely delectable. On December 10, 2021, Steven Spielberg and his crew will release a new rendition of the original, classic stage musical West Side Story in theatres, starring stars from the stage and screen, as well as a plethora of brilliant singers and dancers.

The plot was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with one key exception. The Jets and Sharks are not “both alike in dignity,” as the Montagues and Capulets were: the Jets are white, with a structural advantage over their Puerto Rican opponents, and this production, with consistent Latino casting for the Sharks, emphasizes the white cops’ tribal similarity to the Jets in a kind of co-belligerent neutrality.
Corey Stoll plays Lieutenant Schrank, and Officer Krupke is played by Brian D’Arcy James, who is sweaty and bitter.
