West Side Story 2.0, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a visceral act of ancestor worship: a beautifully conceived, masterfully adapted, and visually stunning revival. No one but Spielberg could have pulled it off, bringing Leonard Bernstein’s score and Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics to life like this. Spielberg has moved Mara’s egotistical I Feel Pretty from the wedding studio to a luxury department shop where she works as a cleaner.
Sondheim had second thoughts about this number because of its Cowardian scepticism. Its confection, on the other hand, is completely delectable. On December 10, 2021, Steven Spielberg and his crew will release a new rendition of the original, classic stage musical West Side Story in theatres, starring stars from the stage and screen, as well as a plethora of brilliant singers and dancers.
Storyline and Starcast
Ansel Elgort plays Tony, and Rachel Zegler plays Maria, Anita is played by Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez plays Bernardo, Mike Faist plays Riuff, Corey Stoll plays Lieutenant Schrank, Brian d’Arcy plays Sergeant Krupke. Josh Andres Rivera is played by Josh Andres Rivera (Chino). Rita Moreno, an Academy Award winner who plays a role as Anita in West Side Story 1961, will play Valentina, a redesigned version of Doc.
Steven Spielberg directed the film, which was based on a screenplay by Tony Kusher, an Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright (Lincoln). The film is taken for the screen of Arthur Laurents’ original Broadway musical 1957. Justine Peck, a Tony Award winner, will choreograph the film’s musical moments. Kevin McCollum, a Tony Award nominee, and Kristie Macosko Krieger, an Academy Award nominee, are both in charge of the production.
The plot was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with one key exception. The Jets and Sharks are not “both alike in dignity,” as the Montagues and Capulets were: the Jets are white, with a structural advantage over their Puerto Rican opponents, and this production, with consistent Latino casting for the Sharks, emphasizes the white cops’ tribal similarity to the Jets in a kind of co-belligerent neutrality.
Corey Stoll plays Lieutenant Schrank, and Officer Krupke is played by Brian D’Arcy James, who is sweaty and bitter.
