While the delays have been pushing the upcoming Avatar sequel to new release dates, Avatar 2 may finally hit the screens on December 2022. Avatar franchise will have four movies in total, and James Cameron already has his hands full with the upcoming sequels. The shooting for Avatar 2 is complete, and Cameron is deep down in the third one. So, it is likely that Avatar 3 will not take long to release, unlike its prequel Avatar 2 which will be hitting theatres after more than a decade.
One of the most iconic science-fiction blockbusters, Avatar 2 will take the events back to Pandora. Here’s what you can expect from the upcoming Avatar sequel.
When will Avatar 2 Release? What is The Future of The Franchise?
The release date of Avatar 2 is now delayed from its proposed release in December 2021 to December 16, 2022. Because of the Covid crisis, production suffered a setback. The live-actions of the movie were filmed in New York which was complete by September 2020. However, since the virtual effects form the essence of this movie, it still needs some time to come full circle. In Los Angeles, the team is carrying out the visual production. The release of the following sequels will take place every alternate year from December up to 2028. That is how Cameron has planned the franchise’s release.
How will The Plot of Avatar 2 Unfold?
The first of the images revealed for the upcoming movie gives a glimpse of Pandora, which is set up in a mesmerizing oceanic environment. Very little is known about what may happen in the coming sequel. Humanity’s existence is probably under threat. The Resources Development Association (RDA) corporation make it to Pandora by embarking on a long journey from the Earth in the original movie to get unobtanium. But, they fail in their expedition to get procure this valuable and rare energy source that is needed to keep the Earth functional. Avatar 2 may pick up the fate of humanity after this failed endeavor.
However, the main focus will be on the lives in Pandora. Jake Sully, now the Chieftain and Neytiri, the clan’s high priestess have three children, and the plot will encircle their lives. Familial themes form the core of this movie, and each film in the sequel will be a standalone one. Hence, the narrative does not exactly depend on the prequel, but yet stands as a segment of the wider arc according to Landau.
According to him, the scriptwriting process is behind the delays as the team did not want to rush through it and deliver a proper, enduring visual and emotional journey to each sequel. The story takes place after several years since the inception of Avatar. Water is important to the concept of this sequel, and most of the sequences occur around the ocean in Pandora. The movie will step into ‘some dark places’, and will travel way beyond imagination. Each movie will take place in varied settings, and new cultures.
Moreover, to remain true to its source, the motion capture for the sequel also takes place underwater. As per Cameron, shooting underwater is not much of an issue as capturing the air-water interface which acts as a moving mirror and creates the problem.
Who is in the Cast of Avatar 2?
The core cast will be back once again as a part of Avatar 2. It includes Neytiri by Zoe Saldana and Jake Sully by Sam Worthington. Stephen Lang will play the antagonist in all the sequels as Colonel Miles Quaritch. Kate Winslet is in the cast as Ronal. Matt Gerald plays Corporal Lyle Wainfleet. Sigourney Weaver, Edie Falco, Oona Chaplin, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, and Cliff Curtis are all a part of the cast. Cliff Curtis will be leading the Metkayina, a new Na’vi clan. Vin Diesel is also joining this franchise.
All of these details hint at the sequel being worth the wait. Only if the movie is not subject to any unintended delays, it will finally release in December 2022. And, the planning for the sequels provides an added reassurance that the Avatar franchise is worth this wait.
