Channing Tatum showcased a whole new side in Magic Mike, which hit theatres back in 2012. Channing created and made a series in Las Vegas, Magic Mike Live, which is still aired after the success of Magic Mike and its sequel, Magic Mike XXL. Find Magic Mike brings a new dimension to the universe where men who have been out of their groove try to restore it through the moves of Magic Mike (for a chance to win $100k).
What is the Show About?
Magic Mike Live is a Bootcamp for men looking for their magic after losing it. The show attempts to find them through its Finding Magic Mike show. There were thousands of applicants, but only fifty have been selected out of the millions. Behaviorally, these are men with insecurity and lack of confidence, who are looking for direction, who are unsure of themselves.
Alison Faulk, the choreographer for the show (and the films), helped reduce the number of dancers from fifty to just twenty-five by working with other creatives. The first round will consist of stripping down to only underwear, followed by a choreography lesson.
Is it Reminiscent of Any Particular Show?
The similarities to reality competition show like America’s Next Top Model and RuPaul’s Drag Race may prompt you to recall Magic Mike’s main aim to assist men in reclaiming their identity as well as documentary films like Strip Down, Rise Up.
How Did the Public Find The Show?
Finding Magic Mike attempts to tell a story instead of attempting to deconstruct the state of modern man by presenting us with a group of dudes with all kinds of hopes and dreams and letting them tell their own stories. We don’t often see men this exposed (literally and figuratively) and vulnerable, expressing their fears and insecurities, but my, what an intense experience it is.
This show probably shouldn’t have moved the fans as much as it did. They expected to giggle and grimace through most of it. But they liked it! This show is really about dudes learning how to dance, letting go of everything else, and becoming empowered by the freedom of shedding their clothes and all of the baggage that goes along with it.
It was surprising to see what a good cast this reality show has and what guys actually need. The first episode makes it clear that this is going to be a thrilling show as these guys are pushed to do things they probably never thought they would.
A touching, funny, and endearing combination of sweet, funny, and moving, Finding Magic Mike is an invaluable reminder of men’s right to love themselves (and find their own uniqueness). Fans are looking forward to seeing what’s next.
What’s in Store For You?
In terms of sex and skin, there are moments of very explicit dancing (and funny attempts to replicate such moves), but, for the most part, Finding Magic Mike is a wholesome movie.
Adonis steals the show in this first instalment, even though he’s one of the most insecure competitors we come across. He is simultaneously the everyman and the unexpected natural.
Self-deprecating, he nevertheless has a great deal of energy, owning his space on stage and impressing everyone watching. His joyful hollering and big heart make him a contestant you root for right from the start, unaware of how great he truly is. You can’t help but get excited about what’s ahead for him this season!
