The mixtape is a family film that revolves around a mixtape that is emotionally significant. With its release, it won’t be wrong to say that Netflix is going totally analog. It’s about a girl who tries to find out about her parents by reconstructing the songs present on the cassette.
This movie has been in the making for quite some time now. Stacey Menear wrote the script, and it was also in 2009 Black List, which features the best-unproduced scripts. In 2012, reports came out that Tom Vaugh would direct the project. As years passed by, nothing happened, and the project came to a dead end. Currently, after a decade, the movie is ready to hit Netflix.
Valerie Weiss, who earlier directed TV shows like Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and Outer Banks, will also be directing Mixtape along with Alice Wu. Don’t confuse Mixtape with Soundtrack (which is a canceled project and was renamed as Mixtape) as these are two entirely different movies.
Mixtape will most probably come on Netflix by December 2021. It is just an estimate as official release dates are yet to be announced. Although no release date has been confirmed, a landing page is present on Netflix, indicative of the fact that the movie is going to come super soon. Tags for the movie are family drama, emotional, feel-good, and heartfelt.
The movie is an extension of Netflix Original in the family films genre and will now be included in the list along with some popular titles like Yes Day, Tall Girl, and Feel the Beat. Gil Netter, who earlier produced The Blind Side and Life of Pi (both of them were nominated for Academy Awards), will be the producer of Mixtape.
The cast of the movie includes Julie Bowen, Gemma Brooke Allen, Audrey Hsieh, Olga Petsa, Nick Thune, and Jackson Rathbone. Julie Bowen is best known for her role in Modern Family. For her performance, she won two Emmy Awards. We also saw her in Happy Gilmore. Gemma Brooke Allen will be seen in the role of Beverly. She appeared in shoes like SEAL Team, Dr. Ken, and Teachers. Her friends- Nicky and Ellen, are played by Olga Petsa and Audrey Hsieh, respectively.
Nick Thune, a comedian, plays the role of Anti, who owns a store that helps Beverly search the songs present on the mixtape. Jackson Rathbone, popularly known for his role as Jasper in the Twilight film, will play the role of Wes, a musician.
The official synopsis for the film has been put on the landing page of the movie on Netflix. The plot can be summarized as Beverly Moody, and an orphan, discovers her parents’ mixtape. She is raised by Gail, her grandmother, who finds it difficult to converse with her about her parents. Beverly goes on a journey to find more about her parents. On her journey, she becomes friends with her neighbor Ellen.
