Rain Man is an American drama written by Barry Morrow and directed by Barry Levinson. Tom Cruise is seen playing the role of Charlie Babbitt, a young, selfish wheeler-dealer. After his father’s death, he discovers that all of the fortunes have been given to his father’s other son- Raymond (played by Dustin Hoffman). Charlie was unaware of Ramond’s mere existence. His father left him with rose bushes and his vintage car. Valeria Golino plays the role of Charlie’s girlfriend.
This movie premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and earned a Golden Bear prize. MGM/Ua Communications had done the theatrical release of the movie in the US in December 1988. The film was a commercial success and became the highest-grossing film of 1988. It earned eight nominations at 61st Academy Awards and won four out of them. The movie won the award of Best Actor, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Apart from Academy Awards, it also won two Golden Globe Awards.
The Plot of Rain Man
Charlie Babbitt lives in LA and is a driven salesman. He learns that the shipment of four Lamborghini cars is being held at the port as they don’t meet EPA emission standards. Despite this, he heads out to chill with his girlfriend and co-worker. When he was on the way, he received an unknown call which led him to learn the fact that his father is dead and that he spent his last moments in Cincinnati, Ohio. He flies with Susanna to attend the funeral.
He learns that his father left him only a 1949 Buick Roadmaster and some rose bushes on reaching there. He left with some unknown trustee for the rest of his fortune, which was about $3 million. Now, he searches for the trustee and finds out that this trustee is the director of the Walbrook Institute, an institute that takes care of the developmentally disabled. The money was given to this unknown person so that he could take good care of Raymond, Charlie’s elder brother. Charlie was completely unaware of Raymond’s existence.
Charlie and Susanna head to the institute to meet Dr. Bruner and Raymond. They find out that Raymond is an autistic savant. Dr. Raymond explains his condition to both Charlie and Susanna. Without even thinking, Charlie takes Raymond out of the institute. These three now spend the night together in a motel room. Now, what happens next?
