With the advancement in technology, the visual effects (VFX) industry grew impressively. This gave a face to a mythological character – Zombie. As per Haitian folklore, zombies are dead individuals who are reanimated, usually through dark magic. The presence of zombies on the silver screen, especially in the horror and fantasy genre, is nothing new these days.
The central idea of movies with zombies is commonly the fight between good and evil, Zombies occupying the evil side. But what if zombies turn out to be good instead of evil? The latest flick by Nicolas Entel and Miguel Tejada-Flores – SOZ: Soldados o Zombies comes to answer this unusual question.

S.O.Z. Soldados o Zombies revolves around a drug trafficker escaping from a high-security prison and finds refuge in a remote drug rehabilitation center. Near the rehabilitation center lies the bodies of abandoned soldiers who were victims of a failed military experiment by the U.S. These soldiers were later revived as zombies. On the quest to find the trafficker, the U.S. army infected these zombies, turning them into a Zombie Army. How this army causes chaos in the state and how the U.S. Army annihilates this newly infected army forms the series plot.
S.O.Z. Soldados o Zombies tried hard to create a dramatic television series full of prestige and grandeur but failed miserably. The series turns out to be a ridiculous mixture of mutant pigs, mad scientists, Mexican drug cartels and the U.S. military. With an average rating of 4.9 on IMDb, the latest Amazon Prime series fails to impact the audience. While the sloppy editing, nonsensical story, weak screenplay and not-so-good fx and prosthetics received a lot of criticism, fans of the genre appreciated the idea behind the plot and the setting of the series.
Some of the viewers believed that S.O.Z. Soldados o Zombies could do well if presented as a feature film rather than an 8-episode series. If you love the zombie genre and want to watch a film with a good storyline, you go for The Walking Dead, and you can, undoubtedly, skip this series. If you still want to go for S.O.Z. Soldados o Zombies, it is suggested to go with your expectations’ bar considerably low. The wacky CGI and questionable aesthetics may cause severe headaches, but the unexpected twists may prove entertaining.
Potential Sequel
The post-apocalyptic horror streaming television series, which began streaming on August 6, 2021, did not go well with the audience. The makers of the show were waiting for the audience’s response before going ahead with season 2. As of now, there’s no news regarding the confirmation of the second season. If the makers still show a green signal to the second season of SOZ: Soldados o Zombies, we can expect it to release after a minimum 12 months gap, depending upon the time required by the team for writing, filming, and post-production. But in the end, only time will decide the fate of the show. Stay tuned for more updates.
