Going back to the times when romantic comedies were the most popular amongst all genres, we have a 2001 romantic comedy which is a must watch– Serendipity. The movie has Peter Chelsom, as its director, with the penmanship of Marc Klein.
The movie was shot in its entirety in America in the summer of 2000 and was released on October 5, 2001. The most striking fact was when the movie was shot, the World Trade Centre was very much existing, but following the 9/11 attack, all the building images were removed before releasing the movie to avoid hurting any sentiments.
Plot
The movie plot is timed around Christmas when Jonathan Trager meets with Sara Thomas while purchasing a pair of gloves at Bloomingdale’s. When they meet, both are in a relationship with different individuals, but both of them feel a mutual attraction and share a sweet item at a café named Serendipity III. Sara believes that fate is the deciding factor in her life.
Following their first meet, they meet for the second time in a quest to find some of their individual lost belongings that they might have dropped at the café. Even though they end up exchanging numbers, Sara feels that it is a bad omen and suggests that they will release their numbers in the universe and let fate do its magic.
Sara writes her number in a book named Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Jonathan writes him on a 5-dollar bill. They feel if they come across these items again, they will find a way to each other.
As time flies, both are deeply involved with their respective partners, but eventually, with time, find a way to each other. We have to watch the movie in order to find out how and when that happens and do they get their happy ending or is it another plausible love story lost in time.
