What is the storyline of Spring And Port Wine?

The plot follows the journey of the Crompton family living in Bolton town. The head of the family is Rafe Crompton who is a proud man working in a local weaving mill. He isn’t a wealthy individual and lives in a city-style council house with a garden unlike the typical brick terraced houses in the town. Towards the end of week, he collects money from his children that they earned and hands it over to his better half Daisy. The latter along with their elder daughter Florence runs the household and maintains the budget.

Meanwhile, the younger daughter of the family, Hilda generally doesn’t seem to participate in family discussions and prefers not to eat the herring made for tea. Her adamant father makes sure that she eats it. Then there are two sons to Mr. and Mrs. Crompton- Harold and Wilfred.

However, on one fine day, the herring issue is taken to a whole new level when it suddenly disappears but later turns it has been eaten by a cat. This agitates Mr. Crompton who then makes his son Wilfred swear to prove his innocence. The latter gets tensed and passes out. This provokes both the daughters to leave the house.

Where elder daughter Florence shifts with her fiance Arthur, Hilda on the other hand moves to her neighbors- Duckworth’s place. While living with the Duckworths which is comprised of Mr. Duckworth, his wife, and daughter, she discovers that she is pregnant. In order to help her, Daisy gives her some money by pawning the new overcoat. She is also taught by Mrs. Duckworth the tactic to get to the cash box. But the scenario soon comes to the notice of Mr. Crompton who becomes furious.
