1999 horror movie Stir Of Echoes, has been inspired by Richard Matheson’s book of the same name of 1958. It is directed as well as written by David Koepp while production has been taken care by Gavin Polone and Judy Hofflund. It got released on 10th of September 1999 and had a duration of about 1 hour and 40 minutes. The movie revolves around the protagonist Tom Witzky and his frightful encounters post hypnosis by his sister-in-law.

The story focuses on a phone operator named Tom Witzky who along with his commuting-with-dead son Jake and pregnant wife Maggie lives in Chicago. One fine evening, he urges his sister-in-law Liza to put him under the hypnotic spell. She does so and during the procedure suggests he to broaden his narrow-mindedness. After this incident, he begins to have frightening visions of a girl that turns out to be his neighbor that went missing a few months back.

Then follows a series of incidents that disturb Tom and his family eventually making him an insomniac. He turns to Liza to cure him from what she had done with him. During the hypnosis, it revealed that Samantha, the girl he had visions about wants Tom to fulfill her wish in order to leave him. Tom does what she says and finds out the truth about her death and confronts the accused and ultimately freeing himself from her.

The movie received good cinematic openings and remained in the top position for almost 3 weeks. It went to earn $21.1 million against the budget of $12 million. It has got 67% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and a 67/100 score on Metacritic, making it overall a decent watch, especially Kevin Bacon’s performance.

The supernatural horror film specially made for American television, Stir of Echoes: The Homecoming was released in 2007 on the Syfy network. Penned and directed by Ernie Barbarash and produced by Lions Gate Entertainment, the movie was initially titled The Dead Speak but later renamed to Stir of Echoes: The Homecoming. It only had Jake Witzky in it as the connection with the original movie and was thus different altogether.

The only time that director-actor duo David Koepp and Kevin Bacon were seen together last time was in 2020 in You Should Have Left, which doesn’t have any links with Stir of Echoes and has different source material.
