Inspired by the comic book “The Secret Service” by Dave Gibbons and Mark Miller, The King’s Men is directed by Matthew Vaughn and produced by Disney. The movie is a prequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service(2014) and Kingsman: The Golden Circle(2017), both written and directed by Mattew Vaughn.
The movie was supposed to get released in 2022, but it kept getting delayed due to the Covid situation. So finally, the movie hit the Indian screens on January 14, 2022, tactfully avoiding colliding with other big releases like Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The long delay and giving away big portions of the story in the multiple trailers they’ve released have certainly marred the audience’s excitement. But, if you still want to watch it, here’s all you need to know about it.
When and Where to Watch it?
The movie has just been released into the theatres, so it will take some time before it gets adopted by the streaming services. However, being a Disney production, there is a very high chance that the official online streaming partners to the movie will be Disney+ or HBO Max. Although Amazon Prime and Netflix have made no announcements, if the movie gets released on their platform, it can be expected to release sometime in February.
What to Expect from the Movie?
The King’s Man is the prequel to the well-known ‘Kingsman’ franchise. Set in the World War I scenario, the story follows Orlando Oxford’s struggle against several villains who share the same intention- to end the world and wipe out more than half of its population. Oxford knows he can’t do this alone. Enters his squad. Oxford and his squad, who takes up the name ‘Kingsman.’
Some of the evilest legends of history team up to achieve world domination, including the assassination of GaviloPrincep, which was the immediate cause of the first world war, super-spy Rasputin, and Mata Hari themselves. Disney’s joining as one of the producers provides for a kind of Disney-like set.
If you’re not familiar with the politics during the World War I era, then some events might seem too bizarre to be true, but you can be certain that they are not. Vaughn tried hard not to derail the movie from the facts of history. It almost seems that he wanted to make a period drama on World War and he just incorporated the Kingsman into the storyline.
As against the other movies of this franchise which focuses more on the action, the King’s Man inclines more towards the emotional side. As a result, the movie is more character-heavy than plot-heavy.
Cast
Since the movie is a prequel, we see many new faces. Ralph Fiennes plays the role of Oxford. Harris Dickinson plays the role of Conrad, Oxford’s constant companion and right hand. Other significant cast members include Valerie Pachner, Rhys Ifans, Joel Basman, Germany Aterton, Alexandra Maria Lara, and Djimon Hounsou.
Where did the Filming Take Place?
The movie began in the UK on January 22, 2019. Most of the production took place in the first half of 2019. Some of its shots have been shot in Turin and VenariaReale in Italy.
