New York Times stated the director “must be accorded a bright green light for what he has accomplished in this tight, economic and steadily suspenseful little picture,” even though it is hard to express and difficult to forget. TV Guide called it a well-constructed and executed film.
The film’s story is based on true events that occurred in February 1953. Three hitchhikers take a factory worker and his family under their gunpoint. Ask for ransom when they get to know that his father is rich enough to fulfill his ransom demand. The film opens with off-screen narration, as a photo of the real Courtier family is displayed under the opening credits. The narration states, “In practically all important respects, this is a true story. Where ever possible, we have used the original locations and even the actual words that will be there in the movie. It is the account of a family-the Courtier family.”
Ratings are average. IMDb gave 6.3 out of 10. Although the audience loved the movie and they also gave good ratings to the film.
