the platform movie

The Platform is a 2019 science fiction, horror Spanish movie on Netflix directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. It’s set in a tower whose residents are switched after every thirty days within its floors. The people are fed using a platform that’s initially filled with food at the top floor, the platform gradually descends down the floors stopping for a fixed amount of time.

This ultimately leads to differences among the residents as the people on the top floors get to eat as much as they want but the others get only the leftovers.

A Look Into The Plot

As the movie begins, we see the protagonist Goreng waking up in a cell marked 48. His cellmate Trimagasi tells him that they are in a “vertical Self-Management Center” aka “The Pit”

People on the lower level can only eat what people above them have left in the platform and if they keep any food from the platform, they’re killed. Each month they’re all assigned to new floors.

Having had the option to bring something with them, Goreng brought a copy of Don Quixote, and Trimagasi a self-sharpening knife. He also tells Goreng that, when he was in 132 level, he and his cellmate ate the meat of a man who had fallen down the shaft and died. Then we see a woman, completely covered in blood. Trimagasi informs that she comes down every month in search of her child.

Goreng wanted to get rid of his smoking and thus volunteered to come here for a diploma of six months. Trimagasi was in the cell for manslaughter.

Although the two became friends over the duration of a month, when they were shifted to level 171 Trimagasi tied up Goreng. He said at the level of 171 they wouldn’t get much food and that he plans to cut Goreng’s flesh to feed off it.

He started doing this on the 8th day but Miharu comes down the platform and saves Goreng. Miharu takes care of him and feeds him Trimagasi’s flesh. He laters hallucinates himself turning into Trimagasi.

Level 33

In the third month, Goreng is in level 33 with a woman named Imoguiri. She was the one who interviewed him before he came in and she mentions she is unaware of how bad the conditions are in there. One day Miharu came to there cell, badly injured. They both nurse her.

Level 6

Then he has a cellmate named Baharat who plans to escape the pit. They decide together to go down with the platform and hand out food to people in a quantity that helps them survive. People in the first 50 levels eat each day so they’ll hand out food from the 51st level.

Sr Brambang advices them to convince people to help them while they are distributing the food.

They also had to fight a few people and later find themselves in level 333. There they find Miharu’s daughter. They give him the panna cotta to eat as she was really hungry. They were saving it to give a message to the administrators. He later realises that the girl is his only hope.

He sends the girl up to the chefs to send them the message that they are very ignorant of what all is happening in the tower.
