The staircase is a True Crime Drama Miniseries. It is based on the events of a docuseries of the same name that happened in 2004. The show follows Michael Peterson who is a writer. He was convicted of murdering his wife. She was found dead at the bottom of the staircase. He was charged with murder and sent to Prison. However, Peterson was granted a new trial as new evidence came to light as a critical witness in his case was proven to lie under oath. Peterson submitted an Alford Plea also known as the Kennedy Plea and his charge was reduced to manslaughter. And his sentence was reduced to time served and allowed free.

Then we have Australian Actress Olivia DeJonge as Caitlin’s daughter from her previous marriage.
Previously On The Staircase
In the last episode, we saw the aftermath of Peterson’s appeal getting rejected. But there was a sliver of hope when found several feathers in evidence. Kathleen’s death occurred during the mating season of a certain species of owl. These owls are known for being aggressive during mating season. If one of them got into the house and may have attacked Kathleen causing her to fall down the stairs. The fact that her brain was not damaged from the attack seems to point to an owl also.
But to prove said theory they have to find Owl DNA on Kathleen’s body. But the body has already been buried and to have it exhumed they need Caitlin Kathleen’s next of kin’s permission. Which proved harder as Caitlin believes Peterson to be the murderer. They are at a dead end. But the owl theory would be great for Peterson as it would make him seem innocent. Even if he isn’t.
