Climbing isn’t the focus of the best climbing stories. Climbing movies are no exception. The Alpinist, released on September 10, 2021, in theatres around the country, is a film about life and death and what it means to live and die. It’s a winning recipe, as is the case with all great work, and the film walks this line with dexterity, experience, and nuance. Although it may be the nicest alpine climbing movie ever released, that misses the purpose. Marc-André Leclerc, what possessed him and his imprint on the world, is the major point in the film.
The filmmakers do not lose sight of Leclerc and what his life meant amid stunning scenery and mind-boggling views of his free soloing, and neither should we. The Alpinist also examines Leclerc’s wandering lifestyle. The late mountaineer was described as “publicity-shy” and was said to have died without owning a car or a phone.

What’s the ‘The Alpinist’ is About?
The Alpinist, directed by Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen, tells the story of Leclerc, the late Canadian alpinist who almost everyone lauded as the man who pushed the sport’s razor edge. That is exactly what he did. The producers are well aware that this film, which is set to be a box office success, is possibly the beginning and end of Leclerc’s career. That is an unquestionably enormous load.
Leclerc and Ryan Johnson died in an avalanche in Alaska’s Mendenhall Towers in the year 2018 after he completed the first climb of a new route. Leclerc was just 25 years old at the time. Despite the fact any news articles reported him, no one truly knew what Leclerc was up to, except a few select insiders, a covert existence that Leclerc chose.

As a result, the film’s main focus is on getting to know the “enigmatic” Leclerc. The Alpinist is about falling in love, much as Free Solo was about obsession and the Dawn Wall was about depression and triumph. The picture is amusing and self-effacing at times.
