Its gruesome plot is ensconced in family vs an outright “mean”, atrocious outlaw; who is the head of nothing but guns and goons. The suspense, causing one to stay on the edge of one’s chair, stays almost to the very end of a great movie.
So if you like comeuppance, true love, ego-led arrogance; with man-made justice, and action interspersed with drama; that will keep you watching intently;
Big Jake is one of those Westerns that divide John Wayne fans. Some enjoy it, some don’t. A lot of John Wayne fans don’t consider it a true Western. But for us, it’s easily our favorite John Wayne film. Set at the end of the Western era in America.
A time when cars were replacing horses, and when the old lawless wild west was almost gone. When his grandson is kidnapped and held for ransom “Big Jake McCandless” (a relic of a man. Tough, rugged and a Cowboy of a dying era) is asked by his estranged Wife to retrieve their Grandson and make that responsible pay.
The film has a completely different feel from just about every other Western from John Wayne. Big Jake is surprisingly violent, bloody, and gritty.
John Wayne is on top form and commands the screen in every scene. The action is exciting and there is even some black comedy thrown in. The dialogue and interplay between John Wayne and his on-screen Son’s (one of whom is Patrick Wayne.
