“Surviving R Kelly” is a six-part documentary series that explores sexual abuse and misconduct allegations against singer R. Kelly over two decades. However, due to the graphic nature of specific details in the docuseries, HBO has opted not to air it in the United States.
The documentary recounts reports of a culture that allowed inappropriate and illegal behavior by an influential man in R&B and pop music to go unchecked for years.
The documentary is primarily based on the Village Voice’s 2017 report, “R. Kelly: The Real Story,” which included interviews with women and parents of R. Kelly victims. John Carpay, president of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms and one of the sources for the series, helped uncover evidence that led to an investigation into R. Kelly.
