La Casa de Papel or more famously known as Money Heist, is a Spanish drama that focuses on the heist of the Spanish Royal Mint and Spanish Bank. The series follows eight robbers and their plans to attempt the heist. They are led by The Professor or Sergio, who masterminds the whole heist. The series is told from Tokyo’s perspective, who is one of the robbers.
Álex Pina created the Spanish crime drama for Atresmedia. The series was Produced by Pina with Sonia Martínez, Jesús Colmenar, Esther Martínez Lobato, and Nacho Manubens. The thriller was first released on TV on May 2, 2017, on the Antenna 3 Network channel. Netflix acquired the rights of the series distribution in later parts of 2017. Money Heist currently holds a rating of 8.2 on IMDb.
Money Heist has a foray of fan-favorite characters, but Berlin stands apart. Netflix recently announced a new series on Berlin. But first of all, who is Berlin?
Who is Berlin?
Berlin was a main member of the first heist. He dies a heroic death by saving other team members so they can escape in the heist of the Royal Mint of Spain. Before the heist, Berlin was a thief, and he usually stole jewelry. He was enlisted by The Professor, his younger half-brother, for the Royal Mint of Spain robbery.
Andrés de Fonollosa or more popularly known as Berlin, acted as an on-field commander of the heist and was consulted when The Professor was not reachable. He has an extreme adoration for Art. The whole robbery of the Royal Mint of Spain was an art for him. He is an arrogant and selfish man, so much so that his team often terms him as a psychopath.
He is also a racist and a misogynist with a charismatic and dark sense of humor which the viewers quite enjoy. He is the older half-brother of The Professor. Later, it is revealed that he has a son named Rafael. He is also credited for formulating the plans to rob the Bank of Spain.
Has Netflix Confirmed a Possible Berlin Series?
Even after his death, Berlin has remained a fan-favorite ever since. His sociopathic nature is charismatic to the viewers who still love him. Even Netflix relented on killing him after receiving positive feedback from the viewers. As his character died in the first season of the popular Spanish series, it is speculated by fans and critics that the new spin-off will probably be a prequel for Berlin.
Netflix confirmed in a Q&A session in Madrid on November 30, 2021 that the upcoming Berlin-focused series will serve as an origin story for his character. It will be thrilling for the viewers to see the inception of Berlin and from where his motivations came.
According to Netflix’s Twitter account, Berlin: A New Series, the possible prequel will release in 2023. Pedro Alonso will return as the charming Berlin. Netflix revealed only the release, and more information will be published with time. Till now, only Alonso is confirmed in casting.
