The series is based on the novel Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah, published in 2008. Hannah incorporated the story in the book after taking inspiration from her own life.
She has put in her experience of growing up in the 1970s and 1980s. Maggie Friedman is the creator and executive producer of the series. The storyline of season 1 follows the lives of two women – Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey, who are friends for the past 30 years. It shows the ups and downs of their teenage years. It shows the unbreakable bond they share and how they overcome all the difficulties in their lives together.
Kate is the person who has it all – a good family and a peaceful environment. On the other hand, Tully has to struggle through the years because of her drug addict mom. As the story progresses, both these girls find comfort in each other and become best friends.
