Kaye woke up to the sound of knocking on the door when a strange man asked for help to make a phone call. Kaye offered to help make the phone call but refused to let him inside. Later, she told him to leave. Sometime later, Kaye heard the sound of her door slamming.
Kaye, upon investigating, found the same man standing inside her kitchen with a knife in his hands. He then pounced on Kaye and dragged her to the bedroom and abused her for hours, and stabbed her multiple times with the knife. Even though she was badly injured, Kaye played dead to save her son, who was still asleep in the next room. Fortunately, the abuser fell for the trick and fled.
Kaye managed to get hold of a neighbor who informed the police. Kaye’s life was saved. The authorities collected the man’s DNA from the scene, and Kaye gave them the description of the man. Eventually, a man named Doug DeSilva was arrested based on his suspicious movements monitored by the neighbors. His description matched with the one given by Kaye, but unfortunately, the DNA did not match; hence the man was released.
Kaye had to wait till 2005 to find the man behind the heinous crime; his name was Mark Eskridge. He was already in prison by then for another sexual abuse case in October 2002 in Maryland. Both the case had stark similarities.

Mark faced multiple charges revolving around Kaye’s case. In February 2005, Mark was declared guilty of sexual abuse and multiple other charges in the view of the Maryland case and received a sentence of life imprisonment. Mark was then found guilty of an attempt to murder and sexual abuse related to Kaye’s case. Along with his lifetime imprisonment, he was given an added twenty years of imprisonment.
According to the records, he is still behind bars at North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland.
