Critic’s Opinion
The Falls, directed by Mong-Hong Chung, follows a relationship between a mother and daughter that takes an out-of-the-blue turn while quarantining themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic. The film’s theme is exciting and unique because we slowly get to see films following the real world.
I am not a movie fanatic, and I don’t watch many films because I find them boring, but this film was different, and it single-handedly changed my perspective about movies that can be interesting if made in a well-planned manner. The film is fantastic not because of the acting and the plot, but it is intimate, relatable, and engaging because it makes us look at the relationship we have with our parents.
The film began with a mental health decline from the mother, a turbulent divorce, and being sacked from her job. Still, the film ends with a hopeful and gripping last fifteen minutes, which devastated me because of the surprising ending. The film’s actresses did a fantastic job, and the way they conveyed their dialogues and visual expressions were simply impressive. And it is something I have not seen for a long time, and the amount of praise I have for them will not be enough.
The film shows how flawed individuals are pretending to be invincible. And we get to see the brilliance of the director’s vision, where we get to see blue light coating the family’s apartment moody interiors, which display the hopelessness which will happen in the film.

In my opinion, The Falls is one of the best movies ever created, and for me, it was a great watch. I would recommend it to people who loves and understands movies with a keen interest in details, with a surprising ending and amount of intimacy that can be felt while watching the movie is surreal. And people who do not watch many movies should give it a watch, and they would enjoy it, and it will be worth their time.
