The After Party is a murder mystery comedy by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are also very prominently known for their work on Jump Street & sequel, animations like The Lego movie and Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse. And they didn’t disappoint the fans with this new series either.
Each episode is crafted to show a character’s perspective, ranging from the first episode set in an action genre, second in a romantic comedy, third in a funny musical, fourth as an intense psychological thriller and fifth in a more coming of age genre. All these genres depict, in a way, how the character perceive their life as. It could also hint at the final key to solving the murder.
Episode 5 Recap
Episode 5 was played in a coming-of-age genre. A guy named Walt appears, who no one seems to remember but was the host of the St Patrick’s day party that was brought up in everyone’s story so far. It opened many new doors for doubt and motives as we saw the episode roll through the eyes of Walt. It brings to light many new motives for each character, all plausible in their areas.
Xavier’s more douchebag side is highlighted in this episode and his lust for fame and appreciation. He also becomes a sort of catalyst for Chelsea’s alcohol addiction. Xavier seems to be the reason all characters’ lives went south, which opens many new doors for motives and speculation. Audiences are left with no sympathies for Xavier’s death after episode 5.
Episode 6 Plot Speculations
Isn’t it also extremely suspicious why no one remembers Walt? Are they genuine, or are they pretending because of an incident they wish to lock away forever? Episode 6 is called “Zoë,” and considering that there are only 8 episodes in the season, fans can rest assured that many stones will be turned in this episode.
I am super excited to see the genre in which it would be played; I like Zoë’s character, and I want to see her take on this whole scenario.
Suspects and Motives
Aniq seems to be one of the main suspects as the fight they, Aniq, and Xavier had at a party 15 years ago made him lose his scholarship to Stanford. Chelsea is next in line as a suspect because her drinking container was found near the dead body, and she has a strong motive. Xavier spreading the rumor of her sleeping with him could be why she blames alcoholism and has a grudge against it.
But according to her story, everything was solved before Xavier died. Unknown Messenger seems to be another suspect as he sends threatening msgs to Chelsea and the way the msgs were sent makes this person seem like it’s all planned.
This unknown messenger sends a msg to Chelsea with a grammatical error but corrects it immediately, possibly rereading the texts they are sending? Why did this person text Chelsea to come and hint at her about something that would happen. But we never know; even the most innocent could be hiding big secrets in their pockets, which would only click when the season ends.
