The Murders at Starved Rock is the latest crime series focusing on the famous triple murder of women in 1960. Directed by Jody McVeigh-Schultz and Whitney Braun serving as the supervising director, the series gives an insight into what the man who spent almost his entire life behind bars is up to now.
There is no doubt that such a horrifying act created fear throughout the country, and people are curious to know where the accused is at present, knowing the time he spent behind bars. So let’s find out who Chester Weger actually is and where he is at present.
Who Is Chester Weger?
Chester Wegerworked as a dishwasher at the Starved Rock Lodge. On March 15, 1960, he was spotted by his fellow colleagues with scratches on his face that appeared mysterious owing to the missing of three women Mildred Lindquist, Frances Murphy and Lillian Oetting, at the same time.
But the suspect cleared the air stating that it was the razor cuts on his face and that he was busy writing letters the time three women went hiking on St. Louis Canyon located within the premises of Starved Rock State Park.
On a subsequent day, the buried bodies of three women in the snow were located in a cave in the canyon. The cause for their death was learned to be due to a frozen branch of a tree that was used to hit them until death. Two of the victims had their bodies tied up using white twine, which was also found near Weger’s work station and bodies undressed partially.
Owing to his complicated past, the married man and father of two kids were taken into suspicion immediately. It was because his identity matched the individual accused of raping a minor girl in Matthiessen State Park a few months before the murder of three women, and her body was tied up with twine as well.
But when the interrogation began, initially, he managed to pass the tests but eventually failed in a lie detector around and ultimately accepted the crime. He even provided certain information to the officials that could only be known by an accused. But it wasn’t the end.
After a few days of confessing his crime, Weger took back his statement and claimed that owing to the coercion by the authorities, he was made to say things that he actually did not commit and that made him look like an original criminal.
Where Is Chester Weger Now?
Finally, in the subsequent year, in March, he was accused of the first murder charge of Lillian Oetting and was given imprisonment for life. But on his 24th attempt, he was granted parole by Illinois Prisoner Review Board when he was 80 years of age. Upon being released from the Pinckneyville Correctional Center, he met his family and went on to reside in St. Leonard’s Ministries in Chicago.
This year in October, Weger won the approval for testing the evidence that was found near the dead bodies in order to clear his name. But due to lack of proper storage of the evidence, the case still continues to drag with Weger struggling to prove his innocence.
