It is producing it in a partnership with Blumhouse Television and Big Picture Co. Here’s a quick run-through of what took place in episode 1.
Recap of Episode 1
In the opening episode of this crime-drama series, it sets to motion the chain of events that leads to Pam Hupp’s indulgence in a conspiracy. The series adapts its premise from the true-crime podcast by Dateline NBC, taking a dramatic approach to it.
Pam Hupp is presented as a sociopathic Midwestern riddled in greed, whose ordinary nature from outside deeply contradicts the devilish nature she hides within. She is a life insurance agent who sooner than later finds herself amidst various murder investigations.
The opening episode is titled “She’s a Good Friend.” The episode is directed by Scott Winant, and the teleplay is by Jenny Klein and Jessica Borsickzy. The first episode gives insight into the life of Pam’s best friend, Betsy Faria. It sheds some light on her personal life and opens the stranger-than-fiction circumstances that eventually lead to her murder. Betsy has come to her mother, Janet’s place with her husband, Russ, their two daughters. Betsy has cancer and is good friends with Pam Hupp.
The Plot in Motion
The series brings the viewers to December 27, 2011. Pam dials Betsy, asking Betsy to immediately return home on the pretext of her health. She even insists on driving Betsy home. Betsy’s husband, Mark in the meantime is seen indulging in the board game with his friends. Pam comes to Betsy’s mother’s place, and they drive into the neighborhood. Meanwhile, Pam also drops a call to her husband, thus solidifying an explanation for herself.
The Murder
While the two friends had decided to spend time together, Betsy does not call Pam. Later that night, when Mark comes back home, he finds Betsy dead. Betsy has a slit wrist and multiple stab wounds. He gives 911 a call but acts distressed which raises suspicion against him.
While the scene tries to indicate suicide, the detectives are certain that it is an intended murder. Their doubt is on Russ, and when they talk to Pam, they arrest him on account of Betsy’s murder.
Is Russ the Killer?
Pam’s attempt to emphasize Russ being the murderer seems out of place. She willingly spills Betsy’s personal life details to the detectives. The couple, Betsy and Russ, were not in a good place, but certainly, they were trying. As Pam gives her testimony against Russ, it seems overwhelming. However, Russ does not think as negatively about Pam and thinks her to be Betsy’s confidant. Thus, the team does not have Pam under their suspicions.
