Vinland Saga is an action anime series that is based on a Japanese manga series by Makoto Yukimura. In addition to its intense fight scenes and action-based plotlines, the series draws several historical references, particularly to Norse history and myths. Many of the characters are based on popular ancient legends or even well-known folklore.
The series is set in the early 11th century and is the story of Thorfinn and a Viking military commander Askeladd. Askeladd kills Thorfinn’s father, which makes the young boy challenge the Viking to duels as he grows older. Although Thorfinn loses every time, a strong bond develops between the two, and the Vikings start to become the father Thorfinn couldn’t have.
Vinland Saga Season 2 Release Date
Season 1 of the series first aired on NHK General TV on July 8, 2019, and ran for a duration of 24 episodes until December of the same year. After its running time, it was made available on Amazon Prime and immediately got tremendous global viewership. The next season has been continually hinted at by the production and voice cast of season 1, giving fans something to look forward to later this year. Even the show’s chief designer hinted at working on the second season, in addition to the other shows he is also a part of. In September 2020, sketches of Thorfinn, Askeladd, and Canute were posted on Instagram, having interactions about how the wait for the next season seemed never-ending, a feeling that has long been resonating with the fans.
Before the onset of the pandemic became worldwide, it was speculated that the 2nd season of the show would air in the April of 2021. But since we are past that mark and fully aware of the repercussions of the global pandemic – it is safe to assume that the delay may stretch into late 2021 or even early 2022.
What to Expect in Season 2?
At the very end of season 1, Askeladd decapitates the King after being asked to choose between Canute and his homeland. Canute uses this moment of weakness to kill Askeladdso as to claim that he will be next to the throne. Thorfinn, who has always been seeking revenge, then breaks down and attacks Canute, leading to his immediate capture and possible imprisonment or worse.
The second season of this show is very awaited and will probably show the aftermath of this capture and how the unfulfillment of his vengeance affects the reminder of Thorfinn’s life.
