Born in the year 1967, in Irvine, California, John William Ferrell is one of the biggest comedic actors Hollywood has ever seen. He is known for his highly energetic and show-stealing performances, which have truly made him one of a kind. Other than being an exceptional actor, Will Ferrell is also known for his works as a comedian, writer, and executive producer.

Early Life

Will Ferrell, in this youth, always had an affinity towards comedy. As a student at Irvine’s University High School, Ferrell used to entertain his schoolmates by impersonating various voices on the school’s daily morning announcements. Little did he know he would end up entertaining the whole world!

Ferrell was also known to play varsity football as a high schooler. He even set a record for most field goals ever made. Although he showed great aptitude in the show business, his father’s irregular pay checks and the fear of struggle is what made Will abstain from this path.

Will, being a great sportsman, was exceptionally good at both football and basketball. He was also a captain of his high school basketball team. It was this love for sports that drove him to take up a career in sports journalism.

Will graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles in the year 1990.
He then secured a job as a sports broadcaster on the local cable. After working for a while, he realized he wasn’t delighted with this line of work. His mother then encouraged him to pursue something he felt passionate about. Taking her advice, in 1991, Will auditioned for an Improv comedy group known as “The Groundlings” and spent most of his time honing his improvisation skills.

Fun fact – Soon after quitting his job as a broadcaster, Will Ferrell also took up a job as a hotel valet, and on his second day, he ripped the luggage rack off a van.

Career

The Groundlings

After enrolling with The Groundlings, Will worked alongside Chris Katan, Ana Gasteyer, and Cheri Oteri. Will started taking classes in order to develop his improv skills. In order to earn some money, he even took up a job at an auction house through his friend, Viveca Paulin. The job’s flexibility enabled him to audition for different roles while also making a living. He played some minor roles in various TV shows such as “Living Single,” and some films like “A Bucket of Blood” Will also feature in many TV commercials.

Fun Fact – One winter, Will once served as a mall, Santa Claus to make extra money.

Saturday Night Live

In the early 1990s, Saturday Night live had started to decline in popularity, which drove its executive producer, Lorne Michaels, to hunt for new cast members for the next season. Impressed by his impersonations, Lorne invited Ferrell to join the show in New York, alongside Cheri Oteri, Chris Katan, and 14 other cast members.

SNL gave Ferrell an opportunity to showcase his unique impersonation skills. Some of his notable impersonations include Harry Caray, a baseball announcer, Neil Diamond, a singer, Alex Trebek, a game show host, and the former US President, George W Bush.

While working on SNL, Will Ferrell and Chris Katan together created the sketch “The Roxbury Guys.” Wherein they portrayed the characters of “Steve Butabi” and “Doug Butabi,” respectively. These characters continued getting immense popularity, which eventually led to the release of the movie ” A Night at the Roxbury.” in 1998. In August 2000, Will found love with his Swedish girlfriend, Viveca Paulin, and got happily married.
